Notre Dame Academy Teacher to Speak at the 44th Annual Children’s Literature Conference

Notre Dame Academy’s Media Center and Language Arts teacher Cheryl Brown has been invited to speak at the 44th Annual Children’s Literature Conference sponsored by the University of Georgia’s College of Education Department of Language and Literacy and to be held at the UGA Hotel and Conference Center on March 8-9, 2013.  The conference will be attended by K-8 teachers and library specialists as well as public librarians and others interested in children’s literature.

Mrs. Brown will be speaking on the topic “The Immigrant Experience in Picture Books.”  The topic is based on a project Mrs. Brown designed as a six-week lesson for the media center to complement a fourth grade unit on geography.  Each student read a different picture book that focused on the experience of an immigrant or refugee.  Students were asked to analyze the picture books as a piece of literature and research foreign countries to compare and contrast their picture books and the characters’ experiences.  The project allowed the students to come to a better understanding of the immigrant experience.

Notre Dame Academy is a Marist and International Baccalaureate World School serving Pre-K3 through 8th grades.  Accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization for the Primary Years Programme and SAIS/SACS, the school is located at 4635 River Green Parkway in Duluth, Georgia.  Families interested in Notre Dame Academy may find more information at www.ndacademy.org
