8th Grade Musicians Perform Under Friday Night Lights

Centennial's feeder middle school bands recently performed with the CHS band.

Nearly 100 middle school musicians experienced the thrill of playing under the Friday night lights when they joined the Centennial High School Marching Knights for 8th Grade Night recently.

The event took place during the school’s home football game on Oct. 19 and included students from Haynes Bridge Middle School and Holcomb Bridge Middle School, which are feeder schools for Centennial, as well as private school and home school students.

The 8th graders practiced for weeks to perform the Star-Spangled Banner, Centennial’s fight song and stand music alongside the Marching Knights.

“Our marching band students work extremely hard on the half-time show and the music they play in the stands each week,” said Michael Reid, Centennial’s director of bands. “They really enjoyed the opportunity to give the 8th graders a taste of what it’s like to perform in this great ensemble, and the event gives us an opportunity to do some recruiting for next year.”

The 100 8th graders more than doubled the size of Centennial’s band, which has grown significantly under Reid’s leadership. The Knights’ halftime show features selections from the Wizard of Oz and includes props representing scenes from the movie in both Kansas and Oz. The ensemble has received high scores in exhibition and competition performances this year.

Lauren Seidman and Joy Schroerlucke are principals of Haynes Bridge Middle School and Holcomb Bridge Middle School, respectively. Dr. Christine Chang directs the Haynes Bridge Middle School band, while Jonathan Adel directs the Holcomb Bridge Middle School band. Centennial’s principal, Dr. Steven Miletto, often joins the Marching Knights in the stands during home football games as a trumpet player.

The students performed together again, along with 7th graders, when the three schools presented a Cluster Concert on Thursday, Nov. 1.
