Donate a Pie - Or More - To the Hungry This Holiday

Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church partners with Harry's Farmers Market to hand out pumpkin pies at its food pantry.

Food is a big part of the holidays for most people. However, there are still those, even in North Fulton, who wonder where their next meal will come from. Fortunately, Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Roswell is helping to answer that question for some local residents.

"We get food at a discounted rate from the Atlanta Community Food Bank," said Pleasant Hill Food Pantry Ministry Leader, Gloria Shelton, "and then we give it out to whoever needs it."

Since its founding in 1979, the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) has worked to provide nourishment for those in need. Today, the organization now distributes approximately two million pounds of food and other necessities a month to more than 700 non-profit agencies throughout North Georgia, according to its website.

One of those partner agencies is Pleasant Hill's food pantry. They receive donated food items from ACFB - as well as other local area grocery stores - and send it right back out into the community.

"There aren't any restrictions, you don't have to be from a certain county or anything. If you need it, we'll help you with anything that we have," said Shelton.

The food pantry staff takes their mission to help people seriously, so the ways in which they will assist people goes far beyond just simply handing out food. They also take time to pray with the people who walk through their doors or help them find other agencies which offer additional services like shelter and job placement.

Pleasant Hill's food pantry is open on Wednesdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.; although, the church can be contacted to open the pantry if it's an emergency, Shelton said.

So how can you help?

Contact the church to make a donation, hold your own food drive or simply drop off a box of food.

Today, Dec. 23, Harry's Farmers Market - which often gives its shelf-stable items to the food pantry - is combining its one-day pumpkin pie sale with the opportunity for customers to give. Buy a 9-inch pumpkin pie on sale ($4.99, a $5 savings) for yourself and buy one to donate to PHMBC food pantry.

"The continued giving of our customers during this holiday period is overwhelming," said Jennifer Smeth, Harry's Farmers Market marketing team leader.

According to Smeth, donating a pie is the perfect way to prepare for your holiday dinner and give back to the community at the same time.
