Frugal Family: Spring Break Fun in the Neighborhood

Local indoor activities that won't break the bank are a good rainy day option during Spring Break.

Today is the last day of school for Fulton County students before Spring Break officially begins.  The extended weather forecast suggests that next week will be more thunder showers, high winds and lower than seasonal temperatures.  Bad weather doesn’t have to put the kibosh on your family’s spring break fun, however!  Check out the following local Roswell businesses for fun, indoor activities that won’t put a huge dent in your budget.

Picture Show Movie Theater

Technically, Picture Show Movie Theater is in Marietta, but it’s only about 15 minutes away from historic downtown Roswell, which makes it the closest budget movie theater in town.  It’s also the cheapest place you’ll ever go to see a 3-D movie.  General admission tickets are $1.75 daily, except for Tuesdays when most movies only cost $1.00.  3-D movies cost an extra $2.00, which means you can get tickets to take a family of five to see Tron in 3-D on April 5th for under $20.

Family friendly movies now showing include Disney’s Tangled, Tron, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Yogi Bear and the Green Hornet.  Showtimes vary a lot depending on the movie you want to see, so be sure to call or check the website before heading out.

 Brunswick Zone Roswell

Located on Old Roswell Road, Brunswick Zone is a pretty hip bowling alley that features Cosmic Bowling after midnight on Fridays.  Unless you have older kids though, that’s probably not the time you’ll head over!  The budget friendly option is .99 price buster special on Thursdays and the $39.99 “Family Funtastic” special that includes two hours of bowling and shoe rental for up to six people on Fridays and Saturdays.  If your family enjoys bowling as a general past-time, you should visit the website and sign up for the Brunswick Bonus Zone. Rumor has it that they regularly email coupons for .99 bowling monthly, so if you sign up now, you might get lucky in time for spring break.

 Roswell Public Library

A visit to the library is always a rainy day option and Roswell’s Regional Public Library is one of the best in the county.  Younger children will enjoy the Children’s Library, while older children who aren’t as enamored with reading might be tempted by the library’s collection of Japanese graphic novels (manga).

There are almost always free educational events to enjoy during the week at most Fulton County libraries and Roswell’s library is no exception.  On April 6th from 10 a.m. to noon, children 6 to 10 can participate in hands-on science experiments hosted by Georgia State University’s Bio Bus.  Teens, on the other hand, might enjoy a Zumba class, held on April 7th from 11 a.m. to noon.
