The Superior Court of Fulton County said it is launching a Veterans Expanded Treatment Services — VETS — initiative following its receipt of a $750,000 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Fulton County’s VETS program will be the first its kind in metro Atlanta.

Through VETS, the Fulton County Accountability Court will offer a multi-pronged clinical intervention program for veterans who have entered the criminal justice system as a result of addiction, post traumatic stress disorder, mental illness and other concurrent disorders.

“The Superior Court of Fulton County is honored to be selected to receive this grant," Fulton County Superior Court Administrator Yolanda Lewis said in a statement. "The funds will allow us to offer additional services and better serve veterans struggling with addiction and mental illness.”

The VETS initiative aims to create a treatment and recovery plan for 40 war veterans each year. The program will collaborate with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' health care networks, the Veterans Benefits Administration and veterans’ support organizations.
