Fulton Science Academy High Wants Hearing Over Audit

Fulton County Schools' Superintendent and its Board are looking to close the public charter school by ending its contract.

Fulton Science Academy High School's Governing Board has told Fulton County Schools that it wants to address a negative audit report at the Fulton County Board of Education's Dec. 18 meeting.

"The Board has determined that we will do the right thing by taking the necessary steps to keep this charter school open," said Board Chairman Randall Morgan. "First and foremost, it is our intent to offer parents, and our children, the choice to pursue a first rate education. This charter school does just that and we appreciate the opportunity to present the facts to the school board."

The audit report was the basis for Superintendent Robert Avossa's recommendation that the Board of Education vote to push for closing Fulton Science Academy High at the end of the school year by terminating the public charter school's contract.

The Board of Education followed Avossa's recommendation on Dec. 11, voting to move for the contract termination.

Ultimately the Georgia Department of Education will make the decision on the school's charter contract.
