Gwinnett Tech Land Purchase for Alpharetta Campus OK'd
The Technical College System board approved buying 25 acres at the intersection of GA 400 and Old Milton Parkway, across from the Avalon site.
Alpharetta will be the home for a satellite campus of Gwinnett Technical College with the approval of a purchase of approximately 25 acres of land at the intersection of GA 400 and Old Milton Parkway, it was announced today.
The Technical College System of Georgia board approved the recommendation from Gwinnett Tech’s North Fulton County Site Selection Committee at its Sept. 26 meeting. The recommendation process began in May with the opening of an indication of interest for the North Fulton County Campus Site. Gwinnett Tech’s service area was expanded to include North Fulton County in June 2010.

“We believe we’ve identified an ideal location in our North Fulton County service area for our future campus – a site that provides both needed capacity and is convenient and accessible for area residents. We now look forward to the next steps in this process and the ultimate approval and purchase of the property,” said Sharon Bartels, president, Gwinnett Tech, in the news release.
The site, which is at the southwest corner of GA 400 and Old Milton Parkway, now has to be approved by the State Property Commission for approval. It will be closed by the State Attorney General's office, and that process is expected to take 6-9 months.
Gwinnett Tech's news release said the 25-acre recommended site can support 4 three-story buildings and necessary parking. When fully built out, the campus could serve up to 10,000 students.
Discussions between Gwinnett Tech leadership and North Fulton employers will continue to determine which college credit programs and Continuing Education courses will be offered to support both short-term training needs and future employment demands.
Gwinnett Tech continues to offer focused training through online degree programs, Continuing Education courses and Adult Education programs in North Fulton.
Programs such as Building Operator Certification® and a Patient Care Technician course in North Fulton have met strong response for more than a year.

More than 250 residents are currently being served through Adult Education classes at the former Milton High School. GTC is investigating other sites for Adult Education classes as well.

Why is Gwinett Tech being built in an area with upscale corporate, living and retail development?
Young people going to college or tech schools usually can't afford the goods and services that will surround the campus.
Why does all this have to be developed in a relatively small area?
Traffic is already an increasing nightmare on highway 9 to Windward.
The young people attending the tech college will need housing, inexpensive places to eat, places to go for entertainment that are affordable. Their needs will encompass the surrounding area. Freeway off-on ramps will be very crowded at Old Milton and 400.
City planners, would you please explain why this is a good plan.
I have to say, I think my origional suggestion of something more exclusive/less dense would be better suited to this area.
The congestion is bad now. Can you imagine what it will be like in a few years?
Yes, Avalon is exclusive and really incredible but the whole place around Alpharetta is becoming more like Orange County, Ca. We will be talking like "The Californians" on SNL pretty soon.

Avalon stakeholders bumping shoulders with Gwinett Tech students in the mixed use experience.
I'd really hoped for upscale town homes, a Mediteranian plaza with the cosmopolitan restaurants stakeholders had asked for and an upscale boutique hotel.
Keep the area sophisticated and understated. Attracting corporate exec types, country club types. There is nothing like it in the area and it is needed.
Unfortunately, it looks like we are going to be overbuilt. I imagine we will keep our home just another few years. Too bad, we live within walking distance of town.....which is probably the only way we are going to be able to get there with all the traffic conjestion.
I think a better place for the tech college and 10,000 kids might have been a more open area where you could build the needed restaurants, apts. and college appropriate support services. Don't you think the students would like that better too.
