UPDATED: Wednesday, Aug. 1, 3:26: - Kathleen Hersey was outdone in the final 200m women's butterfly race, Aug. 1. Hersey came in fourth, behind swimmers from China, Spain and Japan. This was her second Olympics.
UPDATED: Tuesday, July 31, 3:59: - Kathleen Hersey kept her top placement in the 200m butterfly semi-finals with a time of a 2:05.90, effectively claiming her spot in the finals, Wednesday, Aug. 1.
Roswell's Kathleen Hersey beat out 27 other swimmers as the top qualifier in Tuesday's 200m butterfly heats with a time of 2:06.41.
"It was great to have a smooth, best time," she told NBC after the race. "I wasn’t expecting it at all."
Hersey, a former Olympian during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, credited a "comfortable" Olympic aquatic center and obvious maturity for doing well in her event.
"Being a part of this team is a dream come true,” she said.
Hersey will move on to the semi-final round. If she secures a spot in the top eight qualifying times she will then move onto the finals, Wednesday, Aug. 1.
