Jeffrey Garrett most recently served as a fellow in orthopedic trauma at the Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

recently announced that Jeffrey Garrett, M.D. will be joining its staff as an orthopedic traumatologist.

While all orthopedic surgeons are trained to treat musculoskeletal injuries, an orthopedic traumatologist has advanced training in the handling of complex, multiple injuries. Garrett will play a critical role in treating patients with traumatic injuries at North Fulton Hospital’s state-designated Level II Adult Trauma Center.

"I am excited to join the trauma team at North Fulton Hospital and assist in the high level of care patients receive there,” said Garrett. “Trauma centers are a great resource for the communities they serve because life-saving treatments are provided quickly, when timing can make all the difference."

A patient might need a traumatologist if they have sustained several injuries—for example, fractures, soft tissue injuries, skin wounds, and injuries to organs—all at the same time, such as those sustained during an automobile accident.

Due to the fact that the presence of multiple injuries greatly increases risk of life-or-limb-threatening complications, and the fact that any one injury can conflict with another, a traumatologist has expertise in determining not only how to address the injuries, but in which order. He or she must also know how to anticipate and prevent any complications or treatment conflicts.

Traumatologists also have specialized knowledge in the problems of fracture healing. Patients with pelvic fractures, poorly healed fractures, deformities caused by fractures will typically be seen by a traumatologist.

Garrett received his medical degree from Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina, and did his internship and residency in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Wake Forest University Health Sciences—where he also was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Fellow. Most recently, Garrett has served as a fellow in orthopedic trauma at the Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida.
