Pumpkins Help Hembree Springs Students Learn Math
Hembree Springs first graders recently explored math in a unique way.
Hembree Springs first graders took pumpkin carving to a whole new level for Pumpkin Day.
First graders in seven classrooms used pumpkins to explore mathematical thinking, through estimation, measuring the circumference and weight of pumpkins. They made hypotheses on whether or not the pumpkins would sink or float. The students also estimated how many seeds would be found in each pumpkin, scooped them all out and counted every seed.
At the end of the special fall learning activity, students were surprised to find that pumpkins weighing over 14 pounds did, in fact, float and they even found one large pumpkin which had over 500 seeds.
