Germaine - who just turned 17 on Jan. 7 - is the southernmost athlete for USA's Winter Youth Olympic Games team and still she placed second highest for the girls USA luge team; behind Summer Britcher, who placed fifth.

On Friday, she Tweeted "Opening ceremonies were awesome!" and "One more day of training then race on monday usa usa usa usa usa."

Over the weekend, Germaine told Boxscore World Sportswire writer Nicholas Olivier that she became interested in the sport of luge at age 13 because of her dad, who used to compete as well.

"We had little mini luge sleds when we were younger to go down the snow with," she told Olivier. "Other than that, I've only been sliding for three years."

Germaine, who completes her schooling online during the winter months, travels to the Winter Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York, for a week of training on the sliding track each month, according to the Boxscore article.
