Roswell Police Train to Handle Developmental Disabilities
A recent training with All About Developmental Disabilities took place Feb. 13.
In cooperation with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) trained about 25 Roswell Police officers, Feb. 13, on how best to deal with individuals with developmental disabilities when they encounter them on emergency or law enforcement calls.
Those disabilities may include problems understanding Miranda warnings, problems answering leading questions, reacting badly to touch, loud noises or bright lights, refusal to make eye contact or answer questions and difficulty phrasing responses, or even difficulty speaking.
The training offered best practices for what to do when encountering individuals with disabilities in the criminal justice system.
