Roswell Remembers 9/11 with Sunday Morning Ceremony

The city welcomes residents and visitors to honor the fallen during its 9/11 ceremony to be held at city hall on Sunday morning.

Roswell residents will get a chance to honor the men and women tragically lost ten years ago during the terror attacks with the "Roswell Remembers 9/11" special event this Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m. at the .

"Roswell Remembers 9/11" - a cooperative effort between the Roswell American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Roswell Rotary Club and the city - will bring together firefighters, law enforcement, military and civilian representatives to memorialize and commemorate the anniversary of this event. Distinguished guests, elected officials and a wreath-laying accompanied by a color guard and bagpipers will highlight the service.

The service will be followed by a one-mile "Remembrance Walk" through historic Roswell to the Warrior Service Center where a remembrance celebration will take place. Thee walk will provide an opportunity for reflection and solidarity for the courage and sacrifice that has been and continues to be made by members of the military on behalf of our nation. The "Remembrance Celebration" begins at noon and will include an open house at the center, lunch from the grill, static military displays, as well as children’s events.

A Look Back: 9/11

On September 11, 2001 the city of New York Fire Department deployed more than 200 units with more than 400 Firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics to the World Trade Center. Of these, 343 lost their lives when the World Trade Center Towers collapsed. Responding to the attacks, the New York City and Port Authority Police Departments lost 60 Officers while evacuating thousands of civilians from the World Trade Center.

The attack on the Pentagon resulted in the loss of 125 lives: 70 civilians and 55 military personnel. More than 2,519 civilians were killed during the attacks including the passengers and crews of the four hijacked airliners, workers and visitors at the World Trade Center and employees of the Pentagon. In all, 2,977 people from more than 90 nations perished during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. 

Since then, allied forces have suffered more than 362,611 casualties of both killed and wounded members of the military in the Global War on Terror. These casualties include more than 11,000 U.S. troops killed worldwide, more than 49,000 Coalition and National (Iraqi and Afghan) troops killed and more than 302,000 troops wounded. Civilian losses, including Iraqi and Afghan citizens, contractors and journalists total more than 876,266 killed and 1,595,854 wounded.
