Roswell Retailers Notice Economic Boost from Holidays

The holiday shopping season provided additional sales for local retailers.

As anyone who has stood in the unemployment line or taken a pay cut in their salary can tell you: times have been hard over these past few years since the recession began in December of 2007 .

And despite the September report by the National Bureau of Economic Research announcing the "Great Recession" had actually ended in June 2009, joblessness, home foreclosures and a slow economic turnaround still seem to be the norm.

But there are bright spots even here in Roswell which give weight to the somewhat puzzling findings.

Many retailers throughout the city report having a good holiday shopping season.

"It has been an amazing Christmas season here at the shop," said Connie Taylor, chief executive officer of the Meditating Mantis Bookstore & Giftshop on Canton Street.

It was the first holiday shopping season in Roswell for newly located, Estella Boutique. But store representative, Amber Dawkins, said sales were steady.

"It's been pretty good for us in Roswell," she added. " We had a huge turnout on the day after Thanksgiving."

Ever popular Harry's Farmers Market seemed even more busy than usual just before Christmas.

"We don't discuss sales figures, but the holidays are always a busy time of year [for us]," said Jennifer Smeth, marketing team leader at Harry's.

So is the holiday economic boost for local retailers a fluke, or is there something behind it?

"Customers, I have found, are certainly searching for guidance, spiritual growth, peace of mind and peace in their hearts  as well as unique gifts  for creating those "aha" moments," said Taylor. "So my kind of business has been a great place during these tough times."

And because of the very nature of the holiday season, Smeth believes customers are even more drawn to Harry's.

"We see more people who are shopping to cook dinner at home rather than going out," she said. "Our core customers are loyal and committed to a healthy, natural and organic lifestyle. Our high-quality organic and natural foods and chef-prepared meals are a more affordable alternative to restaurants yet provide a special food experience."
