Roswell Runner Up for National Parks, Rec Award

The city was one of four departments in the country that was honored as a finalist for the National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Award.

The Roswell City Council spent a good bit of time honoring members of its Roswell Recreation, Parks Historic and Cultural Affairs Department on Monday evening for their hard work in making the city department one of four in the nation to be recognized by the National Recreation and Parks Department (NRPA) with a Gold Medal Award nomination.

Detrick Stanford, NRPA Board of Directors and Clayton County Parks and Recreation, presented city council and department heads with the a plaque recognizing the city for being the runner up in the Class II Gold Medal Award category.

Despite being runner up, Roswell had more activities and programs available to its citizens than the winner did, said Councilman Kent Igleheart.

"We didn't win this year, but we still have the best department," he said.

-The council approved an ordinance amendment allowing customers to bring their own unopened bottle of wine to a restaurant for consumption during their meal. The amendment allows for restaurants, which are licensed to pour wine, to charge a "corkage" fee for the practice, if they so choose.

-The Roswell Youth Lacrosse Association booster club presented the city with a $60,000 check raised during a recent tournament. The city will use the money to make improvements on the Elkins Pointe Middle School field, with Fulton County Schools permission. Once the improvements are complete the field will be one of the best in the country, according to booster club leadership.
