Elderly Woman Struck in Great SkyCanton Patch

A woman who appears to be in her late 60s was flown to Grady Hospital in Atlanta after a SUV struck her today in Canton's Great Sky subdivision.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Tim Cavender said the agency, along with the Canton Fire Department, found the woman in the middle of 215 Towering Peaks.

"She had apparently been struck by a Jeep Liberty SUV," he said. For more on this story, see Canton Patch.

Local Residents Help Police Nab BurglarMidtown Patch

Thanks to the vigilance of Virginia Highland residents, an accused burglar is now behind bars.

Charles Echols, 54, is in the Fulton County Jail on 14 charges related to burglary, according to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office website.

“We believe he is responsible for 13 burglaries in Morningside, Midtown, Virginia Highland, North Highland, Amsterdam and Monroe,” said Atlanta Police Department spokesman Carlos Campos. For more on this story, see Midtown Patch.

One killed when car slams into school bus in DeKalb – AJC.com

One person was killed Thursday morning in a collision between an SUV and a school bus in south DeKalb County.

DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said the bus was stopped at the intersection of Panthersville and Oakvale roads about 7:20 a.m. when, according to witnesses, a black sport utility vehicle approached “at a high rate of speed” and slammed into the back of the bus.

The SUV driver died, Parish said.

She told the AJC that the bus driver and the one student on the bus were uninjured. The bus was headed to nearby Oak View Elementary School. For more on this story, see AJC.com.

Suwanee Lowers Key Tax Rate AgainSuwanee Patch

As expected, Suwanee city leaders voted Tuesday (Aug. 28) to set the 2012 millage rate, which is used to set property taxes, to 4.93.

It represents the third straight year that the city has lowered the benchmark rate. Also, the city has not raised the millage rate since 2002 (when it was 5.99), the beginning of the development of the city's signature parks system. For more on this story, see Suwanee Patch.
