Illegal Immigrants Under 30 Apply by Thousands for Work Permits - South Cobb Patch

Hundreds of illegal immigrants under the age of 31 in Georgia, including Mableton and Austell, are gathering any visas, passports or other identification they have because the Department of Homeland Security is now accepting applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a type of work permit which would prevent them from being deported.  

President Barack Obama issued the executive order in June, and it could potentially help an estimated 1 million undocumented young people who would have been eligible for the failed Development, Relief and Education of Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, according to Huffington Post.

Approval for the permit does not provide any type of legal status or a path to citizenship, said U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Alejandro Mayorkas.

Elderly Woman Victim of Snatch-and-Grab Robbery - Cartersville Patch

A woman who reported she found a wallet Monday at Walmart is suspected of taking it from the purse of an elderly victim as she shopped in the Cartersville store.

The local woman, 88, said she was shopping for umbrellas before 8 p.m. when a woman approached from behind, according to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office report. The victim turned around, startling the alleged thief, and said, "Did you take my wallet out of my purse?"

The suspect said, "No. Do you want to look in my purse?"

The older woman did so, but did not spot her wallet in the purse, and the woman suspected in the theft walked away. After the victim notified the jewelry counter clerk that her wallet had been stolen, the suspect approached the Walmart worker to report she had found a wallet.

Authorities Looking for Wanted Man Last Seen in South Forsyth Subdivision - Cumming Patch

Authorities are looking for a suspect, who may be armed, and who was last seen in a south Forsyth neighborhood Tuesday night.

Kennie Askew, 45, of Lithonia, is wanted by at least three counties, Forsyth, Cobb and Gwinnett, on various charges.

Capt. Tim House of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office told Cumming Patch that a city of Milton police officer was in the Bridle Ridge Subdivision, located off Highway 141 in south Forsyth, at approximately 7:20 p.m. noticed a car that "looked suspicious and acting suspicious" and initiated a traffic stop.

House said Askew pulled his car in the driveway of a house, got out, and went to the front door of the residence. A woman who was a passenger in the car got into the driver's seat.

"So when the city of Milton officer approached the male, he realized that the people of the house didn't know him [Askew] and the male didn't know them," House said.

The officer then asked for the suspect's driver's license and did a background check on him. While this was going on, House said the suspect returned to his car and "reached in and grabbed something that looked like it could have been a weapon and took off running."

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper Concerned About Buckhead Streams - Buckhead Patch

Chattahoochee Riverkeeper's mission is to advocate and secure the protection and stewardship of the Chattahoochee River, its tributaries and watershed. At last week's meeting of the Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods, CRK's Technical Programs Director Jason Ulseth was on hand to talk about the importance of testing for pollution and bacteria in streams throughout neighborhoods in Buckhead. 

According to information provided by CRK, many of the streams flowing through Atlanta neighborhoods and into the Chattahoochee River are polluted with high levels of bacteria due to cracked and overflowing sewers, failing septic systems, and urban runoff.

"That is where most of your real pollution issues take place," Ulseth said.

'The Princess Bride' Showing for Free in Downtown Alpharetta - Alpharetta-Milton Patch

A classic movie will be featured on Friday night in downtown Alpharetta as "The Princess Bride" is shown in the Movies on Milton series.

City organizers say after a busy week of back to school activities, take a break and enjoy a free PG-13 movie on Milton Avenue, across from Alpharetta City Hall.

It's the 20th anniversary of "The Princess Bride," starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright in a film about a young farmhand on a quest to be reunited with his one true love.

The movie will begin at dusk (approximately 8:30 p.m.) on a big inflatable screen

Pre-show festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. with music, inflatables, BBQ, popcorn, sweets and beverages.
