What To Do: Splurging

Tips on taking a day to remember relaxation.

Ask anyone not from here: Americans work too much and don’t relax enough. We all know it’s true. We’re stressed out, over-caffeinated and ready to drop as soon as we get home from a long day at work. With schedules packed to the brim with kids’ sports tournaments, school functions, work and trying to juggle a home-life, sometimes we need a day of pampering. So if you’re looking for a good time, here are a few ways to spend a little green on something that will make you feel like a queen - or king, in some cases.

Pick your passion. Every one of us has a guilty pleasure that we try to regulate when anyone else is watching. Whether it is ice cream, getting a manicure or hitting the mall for a shopping spree, we try to keep the tendencies reined in for the most part. But you deserve a day where you're able to forget how hard most days are. Decide to do whatever you’ve been holding back on. There’s no point in working hard and not being able to enjoy something. Get a full body massage at that new massage parlor. Go get an amazing cut and color at the salon everyone’s been talking about. Get a body wrap so you're able to fit in a size smaller jean size when you leave. Treat yourself to your favorite forbidden dessert - and maybe an extra one on the side.

Remain sane. It’s a pretty good feeling when you finally let yourself walk a little past those perimeters you usually have up. So before you get punch-drunk over pleasure, remember to just pick one crazy splurge! Instead of trying to do everything you haven't been able to do (or eat), simply savor the one thing you've decided on. But be sure to put a cap on it (higher than usual, of course). Unless you have some sort of stopping point (even on a splurge day), you’ll end up feeling guilty at the end of the day – which defeats the whole purpose!

I understand that they are doing away with these articles for a new focus. Bad idea! That is such sad news. We enjoyed the site but doubt I will be back without these columns. Not really interested in a group forum - you can find those anywhere. Best wishes to you and the other great writers out there. You will be missed!
