It was all about serving the community at Centennial High School last week. More than 400 Centennial seniors served at 30 different sites Wednesday, October 17, on Senior Service Day, creating change all around the Atlanta area. At the Autry Mill Nature Center, seniors participated in ground projects cleaning up the area, and at East Roswell Park, seniors decorated the haunted house and the rest of the park for Halloween.
Students also read to and tutored elementary school students, helped with cleanup projects, shelved books at a local library, helped middle school teachers tackle paperwork, cleaned up outside spaces, painted, played with cats, and a multitude of other tasks, including fall beautification projects around Centennial.

Seniors also went to elementary and middle schools in the area as well as three public libraries that were understaffed. They helped middle schoolers organize their binders and helped out at an elementary school career day. Project Lift, which helps 8-12 graders reach their potential through a mentoring program, avoided having to pay for technical support thanks to five computer-savvy Centennial seniors.
At the two Ronald McDonald houses in the area, Centennial seniors cooked breakfast for a total of 80 people who are families of hospital-bound children. Seniors also made their way on Marta to Safehouse Outreach, where they cleaned out a clothing closet and gave out items like water and grilled cheese to the underprivileged. Sunrise at Ivy Ridge and the Tapestry House gave students the opportunity to help the elderly by running exercise programs and playing board games.

Rachel Ewald, a spokesperson for Foster Care Support where the students helped paint the new resale shop and restock the exisiting store said she was “impressed by [the students'] maturity and work ethic” and hopes they can can come back next year.
That is very likely – Centennial seniors have been giving back to the community during the annual Senior Service day for almost a decade.
