Chambrel Resident Sends First E-Mail

Sue Pierson, a resident of Chambrel Roswell, may be retired but she's still keeping up with the times. She recently wrote to her children and grandchildren about her latest learning adventure: via her first e-mail.

Pierson, 88, had never sent an e-mail before last week, but she had always wanted to learn because she knew it would would help her stay connected to her family and friends. Brookdale Senior Living, which owns Chambrel, agreed. In fact, that's the reason the retirement facility offers programs through Connected Living to its residents. The company helps older adults get online in a fun, easy and social way by combining access to simplified technology with personal training and support.

With the help of her Connected Living ambassador, Pierson learned the steps to writing an e-mail.

On Wednesday, July 20, Pierson used her new skills and proudly sent her first e-mail to six of her children and grandchildren. She added her contacts to her Connected Living page, typed a message, attached a picture of herself and sent the email. 

"Just Grandma Pierson sending you my first e-mail,” she wrote. "I didn’t think I’d do it as it’s been weeks and so much to remember, not like my old typewriter. I have to keep up with the times, they keep changing. All is well here, I hope you’re all doing well too. Love you, Grandma Pierson." 

After she sent the e-mail, Pierson invited all of her family members to her Connected Living page.

"We are so happy Mrs. Pierson could surprise her family with her new ability to e-mail," said Sara Terry, vice president of Optimum Life for Brookdale Senior Living. "We are pleased our residents are learning valuable skills from Connected Living and putting those skills to good use in their everyday lives."
