Get Out: Things To Do This Weekend

Honor the fallen of 9/11, learn the ins and outs of fictional writing or better understand your rights as the parent of an autistic child this weekend.

Why Go?: The city of Roswell invites anyone to a very special event, Roswell Remembers 9/11, on Sept. 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Roswell City Hall. The city, in conjunction with the Roswell American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Roswell Rotary Club, will be hosting the event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Where/When: Alpharetta Public Safety Headquarter, 2565 Old Milton Parkway, Alpharetta, GA 30009, Sunday, Sept. 11, 1:30 p.m.

Why Go?: The ceremony includes a presentation of colors, the national anthem, opening prayer, placing of the memorial wreath, bagpipes to Amazing Grace, retiring of the colors and a benediction by Dr. Don Martin. Other speakers include: welcome/introduction of speakers by Gary D. George, Alpharetta director of public safety,Alpharetta Mayor Arthur Letchas, Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood, Georgia State Representative Lynne Riley, Georgia State Senator John Albers.

Where/When: , 950 Forest Street, Roswell, GA 30075, Friday – Saturday Sept. 9 - 10, 8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, 4 p.m.

Why Go?: Return to the days-gone-by of the American Wild West in this fresh new play by film and Broadway star Jeff Daniels. Thrown together by unfortunate circumstances, an ornery vagrant outlaw and a singing cowboy argue the virtues of mayhem, music, true love, and the meaning of life as they try to live by the cowboy code. This prairie showdown features original songs, as well as scoundrels, six-guns and a horse named Buttermilk.

Price: Tickets range from $19.50 to $33.

Why Go?: Help Chattahoochee Nature Center honor our grandparents on Grandparents’ Day as we enjoy a good ol’ fashioned ice cream social. 

Price: Grandparents are free; everyone is $3

Where/When:  , 3150 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, GA 30022, Saturday, Sept. 10, 8:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Why Go?: The Johns Creek Farmer's Market offers locally grown fruits and vegetables, honey and homemade jellies, pastas and sauces, freshly made breads and scores of other items to whet the palate. The market is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and on Sept. 10 will be located on the field with the rest of the festival activities and vendors.

The Fall Family Festival, which kicks off at 10 a.m. and runs to 3 p.m., will feature many new attractions. Among the new activities will be multiple bounce houses, a Velcro-wall, a bungee run and a radar gun to test pitching speed. The city will bring back old favorites, such as an inflatable slide, carnival games, a magician, face-painting and finger painting. Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center will exhibit some of its animals.

Why Go?: “Fundamentals of Fiction: Writing Stories That Enthrall the Reader From Beginning to End" will be led by Jeffrey Stepakoff, author and former Hollywood writer. Topics include: elements of fiction story structure and storytelling; story elements, plot points and use of creative writing techniques to add intrigue. For all level of writers of adult, teen and children's fiction.

Why Go?: This informative and highly interactive workshop is designed to get your questions answered. Allison B. Vrolijk, Esq. will outline parental rights under the "Individuals with Disabilities Education Act" (IDEA) in easy-to-understand terms and share tips to navigate the "Individualized Education Program" (IEP) process. The floor will remain open throughout the workshop for anyone to ask questions.
