Great Escape: Athens

Music and more in the Classic City.

Athens is much more than a football mecca and party town. For adults looking for a weekend getaway, you'll also find live music, historic hotels, boutique shopping, and delicious food. Best of all, it's all just ninety minutes from Roswell.

My husband and I are alumni and we recently spent an overnight trip to Athens having much more fun than we ever had as undergrads. The star of our stay was seeing The Civil Wars play live at The Melting Point, an intimate and comfortable music venue attached to a gourmet restaurant and an elegant hotel and spa. In fact, our music tickets were discounted since we were staying at the attached Foundry Park Inn. We parked at the hotel, took the hotel's shuttle to The Last Resort restaurant in downtown Athens, then returned to The Melting Point for drinks and an incredible show.

If you're not into music, downtown Athens has plenty of boutique shopping, and the college campus is beautiful. The Georgia Museum of Art has an impressive permanent collection and a schedule of visiting shows and events. If you're into food, you can enjoy the famous Golden Bowl at The Grit, a vegan staple, or check out the amazing cakes by Cecilia Villaveces, which are sold by the slice at The Last Resort, East West Bistro and several other downtown eateries.

Just one thing. If you didn't go to UGA, make sure you don't walk under the famous Arches between downtown and North Campus. Legend has it that unless you've graduated from there, walking under the Arches makes you sterile.
