Volunteers will clean a 48-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River on Saturday, April 13.

Nearly 600 volunteers are expected to pull out tons of trash along the Chattahoochee at the , according to a recent press release.

The cleanup is a partnership between the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (CRK), Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited (UCCTU) and National Park Service. Volunteers will help clean up the river at 22 sites along the 48-mile stretch of river through the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA), says the CRK.

"This is the kind of hands-on work that Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and our partners do that reaffirms our commitment to keeping our river clean. We’ll have volunteers paddling the river, wading  in the water, and combing the shoreline for trash," said CRK Executive Director Sally Bethea.

The cleanup netted nearly four tons of trash last year. Oganizers see it as an opportunity to celebrate both the upcoming Earth Day (April 22) and also National Volunteer Month. Individual and group volunteers will work from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. during the cleanup.

The event has pulled every piece of trash imaginable, in previous years, according to organizers. From golf balls, aluminum cans and plastic water bottles to automobile tires and, even a kitchen sink. Overall last year, CRK pulled out 18 tons of trash during 17 cleanup events.
