Roswell Boy Scouts Clean Up Storm Debris

Four local scouts, based out of Roswell United Methodist Church, were inducted into the Order of the Arrow last week.

After cleaning up debris left by the deadly storms that swept through Blairsville two weeks ago, four Roswell scouts from Boy Scout Troop 431 were inducted into the Order of the Arrow (OA) on Sunday, May 1.

Alex Chekos, Oliver Yowell, Ross Smith and J.E.B. Edmondson, whose troop is based out of Roswell United Methodist Church, focused their energies on cleaning storm debris at Camp Woodruff in Blairsville. They also helped to prepare the camp for summer programs.

Their efforts didn't go without reward, the induction ceremony into OA, which is called “the Ordeal” and lasts a full weekend, is the first step into full membership in the prestigious Order of the Arrow—the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America.

For more than 90 years, the OA has recognized scouts who best exemplify the scout oath and law in their daily lives. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live these ideals as well. Arrowmen - as the scouts who've gone through the induction are known - help maintain camping traditions and spirit, promoting year-round and long term resident camping and provide cheerful service to others.  OA service, activities, adventures and training for youth and adults are models of quality leadership development and programming that enrich and help to extend Scouting to America's youth.
