Salud! Cooking School Informs, Entertains

The cooking classes at Harry's Farmers Market are a great way to learn some new techniques in the kitchen.

Next time you're mulling date night, girls night out or just looking for something to do on a random Tuesday - head over to the grocery store. Near the freshly ground coffee, to the left of the checkout lines, Salud! Cooking School at is sparking foodie inspiration and entertaining participants for the price of a good meal.

Despite what you may believe about your own cooking ability, you don't have to be Bobby Flay or Paula Dean to enjoy the process behind a good meal. Whether you consistantly use your KitchenAid or routinely resort to frozen meals in a rush, Salud's class calendar has something that will appeal to anyone and everyone who likes to eat.

Best part: you can pick a class based upon topic interest and kitchen comfort level by choosing whether you want to get hands-on, or simply sit back, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the demonstration.

Hands-on classes allow participants to do just that. Roll up your sleeves and prepare to learn exactly how to hold a knife, whip meringue, or perfect a souffle. Enjoy the fruits of your labor after you've helped make the meal. Classes typically cost anywhere between $55 and $95 per pair.

Demonstration classes are great for getting off your feet, listening to the chef/instructor and watching how the meal is prepared. Two televisions with closed-circuit cameras allow class participants to get a birds-eye view of everything that's happening in the kitchen. Plates of food are brought to you after the chef shows you how it's made, ensuring you'll go home stuffed. Classes typically cost anywhere from $15 to $39.

Either type of class can be a good idea for spending an evening with the girls or your significant other. On the otherhand, you don't need a special occasion to enjoy Salud! Talking a class helps liven up a normal week night; not to mention, beats having to cook your own meal after getting off work.

The kitchen is set up much like a college classroom, with participants facing the chef/instructor. Feel free to chat up the person beside you, but there's no obligation to do so. Shyer types don't need to feel self-concious about going it alone, quite a few do. There's potential to make a new friend with the same interests, but you can just as well listen, learn, eat, drink and leave without having to say much more than a polite hello and whether you want red or white wine if you're there for a demonstration.

The choice - and class - is up to you.
