The Roswell Cultural Arts Center announces Story SLAM, a new monthly competitive storytelling series beginning on June 16.

Each event will offer both amateur and professional storytellers the opportunity to drop their names in the hat for a chance at five minutes to tell their truth – a story told with no notes inspired by each month’s theme. Plus, the winner of each Story SLAM will be invited to compete in a Grand SLAM competition event in 2015.

“We all have stories. That is an integral part of our southern charm. We connect with other human beings through our stories. The RCAC wants to offer up the space to anyone and everyone looking for a community, a connection. All are welcome,” says RCAC Coordinator Sarah Chandler.

Slams start at 7:00 p.m. and take place on Monday nights. The dates and themes for the 2014 Story SLAM series are:

  • June 16: The First Time
  • July 21: Freedom
  • August 18: School Ties
  • September 29: Social Media
  • October 13: Falling
  • November 17: Coming Home
  • December 15: Nut Crackers

With the help of North Fulton School of Music, RCAC will host a local band to provide a 30-minute, pre-show musical set at each Story SLAM from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.  The first act to play on June 16 will be Clea Cullen, a local pianist-singer-songwriter.

Each event will run approximately two hours with a full cash bar in the lobby, which will be open 6:30–9:00 p.m.  Story SLAM admission is $10 cash at the door.

The Story SLAMs will be hosted by a different dynamic duo each month, beginning with two Wesleyan College graduates, RCAC Coordinator Sarah Chandler and local Roswell resident Becky Nelson, hosting on June 16.

RCAC will also collect books and donate them to local families with young children to promote early literacy.  Attendees who bring a book for a child 6 or under will receive $5 off admission.

The Story SLAMs are made possible in part by a generous donation from North Fulton School of Music. For more information, visit www.roswellcac.com or follow RCAC on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram (#RoswellCAC).
