Visions for Vacancies: What Should Go in This Suwanee Strip Mall?

Old Town Village sits more than half empty. Share your ideas.

It's still something of a familiar sight in Suwanee: vacant commercial real estate space.

A strip mall on Scales Road in Suwanee, near McGinnis Ferry Road and on the edge of Old Town, sits more than half-empty. Four of the seven suites are vacant, with one of the filled ones occupied by a church.

Subway and Cooley's Pizza are the only commercial businesses currently operating in the Old Town Village center. It sits unusually far back from busy McGinnis Ferry, between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Buford Highway.

City of Suwanee figures show that this is not unusual. According to CoStar, Suwanee's retail vacancy rate is is 18 percent, significantly higher than that of metro Atlanta as a whole (10.1 percent).

Also in Suwanee, 26 percent of multi-tenant retail space is vacant; that sector accounts for 88 percent of commercial space in the city.

Former tenants in Old Town Village include a nail salon, a tax service and a dry cleaners.

A lot of biking and running groups meet here - they should put a bike store!

Great idea, Aniko.

A Tuesday Morning to compensate for the one that closed on Buford Drive and another that closed on Pleasant Hill. Or, a fine dining restaurant. Thankfully we are getting more and more restaurants but no authentic fine dining establishments and I think Suwanee's ready - and hungry - for this.

More great suggestions, Nancy. We'll fill that mall up soon!

How about an up scale toy and hobby store with quality goods, not the usual dollar store or even toys r us stuff.
