Weekend Getaways: Medieval Times

Raise your stein and toast the knights!

For my birthday last weekend, I was the guest of a king. Seated at a high table and wearing a crown, I was treated to a delicious meal and an evening's entertainment. Knights jousted, horses pranced and an epic battle was fought mere feet away. And the best part is that it was around 25 miles away.

Aye, friends, I speak of Medieval Times at Discover Mills in Lawrenceville. If you've never been and you're not too snobby, you're in for a treat. Although the storyline is made up, the acts of valor and equine tricks are real. The knights joust and play other challenging war games on horseback, from catching rings on lances to throwing spears at targets. Our local castle also includes a performance by rare Andalusian stallions, bred especially for the show and performing amazing tricks that once made these horses fearsome foes at war. And while you enjoy the show, you're served a delicious meal of chicken, ribs, veggies and a fruit turnover. A vegetarian option is also available.

It can be pricey, so I recommend joining The King's Court for e-mailed coupons and a buy-one-get-one-free ticket during the month of your birthday. You can also find coupons in those Val-Pak mailers and the Sunday paper. It's a little campy and commercial - from vendors with glow-in-the-dark swords to an exit-through-the-gift-shop policy - but it's still lots of fun. It costs extra to sit in the first two rows closest to the action, but you also get a commemorative picture and other special considerations. I don't plan on taking my kids until they're over 6 and can hold still, but the kids in the audience really seemed to get into it.

My only complaints? They didn't announce my name in the Happy Birthday announcements and the Green Knight didn't win. But overall, we partied like it was 1399.
