Weekend Getaways: The Dillard House

Relaxation and adventure in the mountains.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the suburbs.Just two hours away from Atlanta, the mountains are cooler, the views are beautiful, and the Dillard House is putting an amazing Southern meal on the table.

For nearly a hundred years, the Dillard House has been a haven in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I still remember passing by it on the way to Tennessee as a child, hearing my parents sigh and recall the wonderful meals they'd eaten there. The Dillard House Restaurant is still known for generous portions of Southern cuisine - from fried chicken to vegetables and pies like grandma used to make - served family style.

As for accommodations, there are lots of choices: from a room in the historic Dillard House itself, which is now called the Rock House Inn, to the luxurious simplicity of the Dillard House Inn. You may also reserve a charming cottage or chalet, for just the two of you or a party of up to fourteen guests.

Although it's perfect for a romantic getaway, the Dillard House offers loads of amenities for families with kids. Swimming pools, jacuzzis, tennis courts, fully-stocked trout ponds, a horseshoe pit and a petting zoo are all on-site and included within your stay. For a little extra, you can also go horseback riding or have a fly-fishing lesson. The area also includes not-far-away attractions like Dollywood, whitewater rafting, , apple picking, hiking and the Biltmore House. Check here for specials.

Cool mountain air, lots of greenspace, relaxation and the perfect rocking chair view after a big meal. That's pretty close to my idea of heaven right now.
