Leonardo DiCaprio stars in Baz Luhrmann's take on "The Great Gatsby," which is at times more style than substance – just like like the novel's main character himself – say some critics."The Great Gatsby" is rated PG-13 and runs two hours and 22 minutes.

It is now playing at Metro Movies 12 in Middletown.

Here's what else the critics are saying: Baz Luhrmann’s new film version of The Great Gatsby is stylish, slick, funny and entertaining—a bit detached at points, a bit overblown at others. That should be all that matters. — Jeremy Mathews, Paste Magazine

Just because a film looks like it was dipped in 18-karat gold doesn’t mean it’s rich in quality. Take this 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. Though every frame overflows with opulence, it stumbles in its quest to be an edgy and thoroughly modern spectacle. — Mara Reinstein, Us WeeklyLuhrmann piles on one shiny distraction after another. But amid all the seductively gaudy excess, DiCaprio finds both the heart and hurt buried within one of literature’s everlasting enigmas. — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

Shush. Listen. That's F. Scott Fitzgerald turning in his grave. Fitzgerald's 1925 The Great Gatsby, a Jazz Age tale of sex, lies and conspicuous consumption, is a great American novel, maybe the greatest. But the tale of dirt-poor Jay Gatsby reinventing himself to win the woman he loves has defied five attempts at filming. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
