Roswell Artist Participates in American Craft Council Show

Julie Sewell will be one of the 225 fine artists showcased at this weekend's American Craft Council Atlanta Show at the Cobb Galleria Centre.

Roswell resident Julie Sewell will join ranks of 225 other master artists who are invited to participate in the the Southeast’s largest juried craft show: the American Craft Council Atlanta Show.

Now in its 22 year, the event is known for showcasing the nation’s  finest craft artisans, many of whom have work on display in museums and top galleries.

Sewell first caught the eye of the prestigious fine craft world by creating both functional and sculptural pottery with a very strong use of texture.

“I look for texture everywhere in nature, using leaves, shells, or wood; or in man-made items like nuts, bolts and screws,” she said.

One of her favorite objects to use for texture is the leaf of a bigleaf magnolia.  “I impress a new leaf for each platter or goblet I make and it makes every piece unique.”

Sewell always loved the look and feel of fired clay so when she moved to Roswell, she began taking classes at the Roswell Visual Arts Center. After learning the basic methods of hand building, she found that she couldn’t get enough of working with clay. Her passion lead to creating a home studio and eventually selling work to others.

She combines her love of flea markets and garage sales with looking for that perfect item to use with her clay. “When I am inspired by an object, I will either impress it into my work for the beautiful texture it will make, or I will incorporate it as an integral part of the work.”

Chosen through a rigorous juried process, Sewell looks forward to being among the nation’s top artisans in their craft.

“I try to attend the ACC show each year, and I have always admired the artists and the quality of their work.   I was so excited when I found out that I would now be one of those artists,” she said.

Attendees may meet Sewell during the ACC Show, which runs Friday, Mar. 11 from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Saturday, Mar. 12 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Mar. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cobb Galleria Centre.  Get a sneak peek at the Preview Party Mar. 10 from 6 – 9 p.m., with proceeds co-benefitting ACC and Museum of Design Atlanta.  To preview the show, visit them online.
