The Creativity Files: Joe Lyons

"The Creativity Files" series profiles Roswell artists who are using their talents to express their own creativity. This week we profile Joe Lyons, a junior at . As a multi-talented musician, Lyons currently plays several instruments and is a rising star within the Georgia musician scene.

Q: What artistic medium(s) do you work with?  

A: My primary instruments are cello, saxophone, piano, mellophone and violin.

Q: How did you get your start as a musician?  

A: I started playing piano in 1st grade, then added cello in 5th grade, saxophone in 8th grade, violin in 9th grade and mellophone in 11th grade.

Q: As you play music, what things inspire you?  

A: I like many different genres, but some favorites are jazz, with players such as Johnny Hodges, and 20th century composers such as Shostakovich and Bernstein. I will study music in college, and, long term, I'd like to be a conductor. So, enjoy watching and learning from as many conductors as possible.    

Q: Do you have a favorite piece to play?  

A: Piano: Clair de Lune - Debussey; Cello: Cello Concerto #1 in C Major - Haydn; Saxophone: Sonata for E Flat Alto Saxophone - Heiden; Mellophone: Symphony #10 in E Minor with the Atlanta CorpsVets Drum and Bugle Corps - Shostokovich; Violin: Concerto #1 in E major - "Spring" - Vivaldi  

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a part of the artistic/musician community in Roswell?

A: I like the variety of options and opportunities. Currently, I am in the Roswell High School Band. [I play] saxophone in the marching band, wind ensemble and jazz band, cello in the Ludwig Symphony Orchestra, mellophone in the Atlanta CorpsVets Drum and Bugle Corps and take lessons from local professionals on multiple instruments each week. I was fortunate to represent Roswell High in the Governor's Honors Program at [Valdosta State University] in Valdosta this summer for music - strings/cello - and in All-State Orchestra the past two years.
