City Didn't Specifically OK Bright Red Exterior on Canton Street

Mac McGee's was free to choose their exterior paint without oversight from the city of Roswell's Historic Preservation Commission.

The bright red exterior of the soon-to-open new Mac McGee's Irish Pub on Canton Street has come as a surprising color choice for some in Roswell's historic district. But the city's Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) had no control over the selection.

The HPC "does not have the ability to regulate a change in paint color because the state enabling legislation - State Preservation Act of 1980 - does not grant us that authority," said Courtney Lankford, a planner with the city of Roswell's Community Development Department.

Despite the city's encouragement for residents and business owners to "use historically appropriate paint colors" on the exterior of buildings, there are no mandated requirements, Lankford told Roswell Patch.

She did say that the HPC reviews the painting of unpainted masonry as it constitutes a change in texture.

"If someone wishes to paint unpainted masonry or make other exterior modifications to a building in the local historic district, they must apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness from the HPC," Lankford said.

The certificates can be approved as a minor or major application; minors are reviewed by city staff and the chair of the HPC, while majors require a full public hearing before the HPC, according to Lankford.

However, since the old Pasti's location was already painted brick, no oversight on its new color selection was needed.

The original Mac McGee's exterior in Decatur is painted the same bright red as the new Roswell location. A representative at the Decatur store said the Roswell restaurant is scheduled to open on March 13.

Roswell Patch has reached out to the Irish pub mangers locally about why they chose the color and we will update the story when they respond.

Start a boycott against the pub until they change the color.

At least it's not bright orange! The Olde Blind Dog, with their fine fare, excellent service and authentic atmosphere is my favorite local Irish pub - and The Harp's a good choice too when I'm on the east side of 400 and in the mood for things Celtic.

There are loads of Irish pubs painted red in Ireland and they are lovely however the traditional color scheme has trim and accents of Black and Gold Leaf paint NOT the white that they currently have...YUCK!

I am more concerned about the embarrassing and disgusting NINE restaurant!! Can we boycott the outdoor yard sale and wet moldy blanket extravaganza they have going on? The building itself is cute but the blankets and new picnic area are horrible. Fans, dead plants, handwritten poster boards, breakfast trays, wet fabric husband pillows, the list goes on...it disturbs and embarrasses me daily!!!! The red is not my favorite but can I live with it, happy someone is filling the space and an Irish Pub is just what we need!!
Rose Animal Hospital March 06, 2013 at 03:49 AM
It is a beautiful and eye catching. Im existed about it opening. We are hopefully opening Rose Animal Hospital sometime this week. We have a pinkish rose exterior in Historic Roswell. I say thank god we have Courtney Lankford and Micha Stryker to oversee these things, but is nice to have color freedom. I just hope it's as good as SALT......I love salt! God bless Roswell and our HPC friends.

I was one of those who wanted to boycott at first, but I've calmed down much like the trim accents have calmed down the red. I still wish they would have painted the rails and posts a different color, but the red does give it a traditional Irish pub look. If there's one thing I hate it's when historic districts go all beige or white. How boring is that?

YES! Accent in black and/or white (columns)...maybe do some faux bricks, some artwork...but the entire thing RED...looks like a haunted house!

Are you kidding me, boycott? The color is fine...what about the ugly mess outside the Nine restaruant with blankets.....awful! Besides, the new Irish Pub is fantastic, authentic decor, delicious food! Try it.! It is sure to bring more life to the Canton Street!
