It's Just Money, So Why Does It Cause So Many Problems?

This week we get to know author and financial planner Karen Lee, a Roswell resident and regular CNN contributor, who explains the connections between money and emotion.

What is your business and how long have you been doing it?

I have a financial planning firm and have been in business for over 24 years. We help people achieve their financial dreams and protect their family through comprehensive financial planning.

What makes you good at what you do?

My staff and I understand that there is more to money than simple math. If it were just that, everyone would be on the road to financial independence instead of on the brink of financial insecurity! We take a holistic approach to counseling people about money and investments, taking into account the deeply emotional connections people have with money.

How did you end up in Roswell area?

Having grown up in Knoxville, Tennessee and subsequently moving away, I knew that the Southeast was where I wanted to establish roots and raise my family. Roswell was the perfect mix of being close to a city, but with all the accoutrements of a suburb. I was in Chicago at the time and moved my practice to Atlanta. After checking out many suburbs, we felt that Roswell, with its parks and recreations program, and proximity to the Chattahoochee River, was the suburb of choice! That was 20 years ago.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Reading fiction, exercising, spending time with friends…going out to great restaurants, which Roswell has plenty of!

How do you stay connected to the community?

With public speaking and writing. I went into financial planning over 24 years ago to help people become financially independent. I had a strong desire since I was a teenager to help people and make a difference in the world. I thought it would be easy to help people with money, because I was good with money personally and all you have to do is follow the financial plan. How wrong I was! You see there is a deeply emotional side to money and that is ignored in the typical financial planning process. My dream is to help people to see the behaviors that keep them stuck financially. I am accomplishing this through the venues of public speaking, writing books, radio and television. From this personal insight, people will be able to change their financial lives and become financially successful. I’ve recently published my first book called "It’s Just Money, So Why Does It Cause So Many Problems?"  I am also a regular contributor on CNN on Saturdays with Fredricka Whitfield.
