North Fulton Hospital Rolls Out New Robotic Spine Surgery

The Renaissance™ Mazor Robot allows for a minimally invasive procedure and could speed up rehabilitation time for patients.

North Fulton Hospital has rolled out an innovative form of surgery.

The hospital will offer adults who need spine surgery a minimally invasive procedure using hat's called the Renaissance™ Mazor Robot. The robot, along with the skills and knowledge of the hospital's orthopedic and spine surgeons and neurosurgeons, could offer less rehabilitation from surgery and "get patients back to normal activities much more quickly," according to a press release from the hospital.

That, the hospital says, means less pain, smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery for patients. However, minimally invasive surgeries can be challenging due to the lack of direct line-of-vision, often requring intraoperative X-rays

But the Renaissance™ Mazor Robotic spine system allows doctors to forgo using muliple x-rays, which gives patients minimal radiation.

“The Mazor robot is great because it allows for pre-operative planning and can save time in the operating room,” said Dr. Jason W. Velez, orthopedic surgeon at North Fulton Hospital. “I’m very excited about being able to use the robot during surgeries on patients with spinal deformaties that might have been inoperable otherwise.”

The Renaissance™ is used to plan the ideal surgery in a virtual 3D environment before anyone enters the operating room. The plan is then used to help guide the surgeon during the procedure.

“We are very excited that North Fulton Hospital will be one of the first hospitals in the Atlanta area to have the Mazor Robot and to be able to offer this kind of surgery to adults", says Deborah C. Keel, CEO of North Fulton Hospital. "This is an outstanding technology. The Mazor robot provides the potential for less pain and quicker recoveries.”
