The Powerhouse Self-Defense Program of Roswell has begun to empower and educate hundreds of girls and women across the United States.
The Girl Scouts of USA has consistently used the Powerhouse Self-Defense Program, which was established in November of 2011, as their number one source for education on awareness and self defense techniques. The Powerhouse self-defense curriculum coincides with the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character.
The program has held workshops for local girl scouts over the past year, mostly in the Atlanta area. However, after providing workshops for girl scouts from around the country at the Girl Scouts Centennial Camporee held this year in Savannah, GA, Powerhouse Self-Defense has expanded nationally.
As a result of this expansion, Powerhouse is set to train women and girls in San Antonio. A three hour workshop teaches participants to be aware of their surroundings and includes training on hand and leg techniques taught in martial arts programs. Girls will learn to use these techniques for defense.
Jennifer Riis-Poulsen, Founder & CEO and also a 2nd degree black belt, formed Powerhouse Self-Defense as a response to the ever-increasing statistics on the number of women attacked and sexually assaulted each year. She made reducing these statistics a personal goal and set out to develop a comprehensive self-defense program focused on awareness and powerful techniques used for defense. The curriculum is based on her 11 years of martial arts experience, and is designed for all types of women and all age groups from 12 years of age and above; however, elementary school age children, boys and girls, are welcomed to take part in the Junior Protection & Empowerment Workshops, which are geared to 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Our Bullying Prevention & Empowerment workshops for middle and high school boys and girls are scheduled to take-off by early 2013.
