Powerhouse Self-Defense Trains Hundreds of Girl Scouts

The Roswell self-defense company empowered 625 girls during a week at camp in Savannah, Ga.

The Powerhouse Self-Defense program in Roswell was only established in November of 2011, but already it has begun to empower and educate hundreds of girls and women across the country, including 625 Girl Scouts of America during their Centennial Camporee in Savannah, Ga. during June.

Over the past eight months, Powerhouse Self-Defense has held workshops for local girl scouts at the headquarters located in Mableton, Ga. The partnership resulted in a request by the Girl Scouts organization to go more widespread with the self-defense education, inviting the local business to attend the Camporee. Girl Scouts from 37 states and three countries were empowered and educated in awareness and self-defense by Powerhouse during the week.

Because the workshops were so successful, several troop leaders from nearly a dozen states have requested additional workshops in their states, including Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, New York and Illinois.

Powerhouse founder and CEO Jennifer Riis-Poulsen, a 2nd degree black belt, formed Powerhouse Self-Defense as a response to the ever-increasing statistics on the number of women attacked and sexually assaulted each year. She made reducing these statistics a personal goal and set out to develop a comprehensive self-defense program focused on awareness and powerful techniques used for defense.

The self-defense curriculum is based on her 11 years of martial arts experience, and is designed for all types of women and all age groups from 12 years of age and above; however, children under the age of 12 are welcomed to take part in the Bullying Prevention Program (BPP) and the Kids Awareness Program (KAP), which are scheduled to take off late this summer.
