“You need a haircut.” Those five words can strike fear in parents and children alike. Visions of wiggly kids, uneven locks, nicked ears and tears dance through heads at the very thought. But one Roswell salon is working to change all that with an inventive approach to children’s haircare.
in the Roswell Corners/Super Target shopping center, 1155 Woodstock Road, Suite 710, is not your daddy’s barbershop. Or your mother’s zen-like salon for that matter. Instead, this brightly-colored, kid-friendly shop is a wonderland of pint-sized fun.
Nancy and Scott Anderson opened the Roswell Pigtails & Crewcuts on May 1, 2010. They also own the West Cobb location. A former social worker, Anderson said she saw a need for a salon of this type, where the environment puts both the child and the parent at ease.
Anderson said her trained stylists are adept at styling the tresses of even the most anxious children, adding that they specialize in “giving a great haircut to a moving target.”
The concept of the salon creates an appealing, entertaining environment where both parents and children are comfortable. Small-scale salon chairs in fun shapes like a taxi, police car and even a fire engine with working bell give kids something to focus on besides the scissors. A movie playing above each station further distracts even the salon’s youngest clients. Though the salon has a no appointments, walk-in-only policy, a playroom brimming with fun and educational toys (shh, don’t tell the kids) makes child’s play of waiting their turn. And two full-sized chairs with Playstation 2 access mean even older siblings will enjoy a visit to Pigtails & Crewcuts.
Though this is a kid-centered salon, parents are welcome to have their hair cut here as well while their children enjoy the playroom amenities.
“Parents can come in for a haircut and not have to get a babysitter,” Nancy Anderson said.
Pigtails & Crewcuts also offers customized, themed birthday parties for children ages 4-8, where children are allowed to play dress-up and put their imaginations to work.
“We can share in the milestones of a child’s life,” said Anderson, emphasizing that they refer to their clients as “the Pigtails & Crewcuts family” and maintain family-friendly hours for both clients and stylists, many of whom are working mothers.
