Taste of Roswell: Lucky's Burgers & Brew

This Alpharetta Highway eatery is a "watering hole" for both humans and canines.

You could drive around looking for a place to eat until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Occassionally, Roswell Patch will pick a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out.

Here's this week's choice:

Lucky's Burgers & Brew

The facts

The burger and beer joint was opened by co-owners Ernie, Diane and Ted Lescher during the summer of 2010 as a casual dining spot that would serve "the finest foods, made with the freshest ingredients." The café's address is 1144 Alpharetta Highway, Roswell. The hours are Monday - Thursday: 11:30 a.m. - 10 p.m., Friday - Saturday: 11:30 a.m. to 12 a.m., Sunday: 11:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Contact them at 770-518-5695 or by e-mailing info@luckysburgerandbrew.com.

The food

The restaurant - named for the owners' golden retriever - is full of creative and delicious sounding menu items.

There's the Fried Pimento Cheese Bites with a spicy pepper jelly sauce (**a personal favorite!). In the burger department try the Georgia Dawg Pounder, a cheese burger with a fried pimento cheese ball atop a 7 oz. burger served with a spicy red pepper mayonnaise. Or the Poodle Chaser, which is topped with melted brie, caramelized onions and Dijon mustard. Maybe the Just East of COBB Salad - which consists of mixed greens with tomatoes, red onion, shredded swiss, blue cheese, cucumbers, guacamole, candied Applewood smoked bacon, chopped egg and spicy ranch BBQ dressing - sounds best to you. But you can always create your own salad with the The Health Care Reform Salad option.

There are also wings, sandwiches, unique sides and desserts like the Buttermilk Pie to choose from as well.

They offer an extensive "brew" list as well, obviously. Check in daily to see what specials they're running.

The features

Lucky's welcomes its customers to sit in its bright and comfortable dining area, or under a covered patio. There is something about the restaurant/bar that feels old-fashioned and yet sleek at the same time. Maybe it's the way the booths look against the modern light fixtures.

A long bar sits off to one side, inviting friends - and/or strangers looking to become friends - to sit down and enjoy a cold one. The restaurant even features a high-tech juke box.

Parking is plentiful since several of the surrounding office spaces are still vacant.

The claim to fame

If you think Lucky's can't be much different than any of the other burger joints around Roswell, think again. Next month they'll begin an eating challenge that's not for the faint-of-heart. The challenge will consist of a mega four-pound, stacked and layered Undertaker burger (topped with Applewood smoked bacon, two slices American cheese, fried egg, fried onion straws and mayonnaise) with a mound of chili cheese tater tots on the side. Finish it all and the $40 meal is yours for free.

The restaurant is also known for allowing canine customers to accompany their owners on the patio. On Sunday, August 7 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Lucky's will be holding its first anniversary party featuring $1 burgers, $1 brews, sinless margaritas, live music, burger-eating contest and a "Doggie Wash." Bring your dog and let him enjoy a good scrub down for $10 (all proceeds benefit Golden Retriever Rescue of Atlanta) while you enjoy dinner.
