Old World Charm Meets Modern Convenience

Nestled on a hill overlooking downtown, is a turn of the century traditional brick home which stands as a reminder of Atlanta from days gone by. When the current homeowners first laid eyes on it, they were able to see past the need for renovation and fell in love with the ‘old world charm’ the home exuded. Yet, like Atlanta herself, the home has changed over the years and had many reasons for renovation.

For years, the homeowners put off remodeling out of fear that the end results would take away from the character of the home. With proper assistance they were guided painlessly through various stages of the renovation process. The home remodeling team initially set out to understand and implement the family’s needs and wants. Their ultimate goal was to maintain the traditional feel of the home while accommodating the family’s need for an additional bath and closet/storage space. The family room and kitchen needed to be re-designed as a flowing space allowing room for everyone. This new space should evoke the personality of the family. The team also needed to focus on creating a true master suite where the homeowners could retreat and relax.

Once the homeowner’s needs were understood, the renovation team went to work on a new layout and design to address the home’s issues. Ultimately, the new design included renovating the existing family room addition by removing a wall that separated it from the kitchen, updating the kitchen and family room. The kitchen, with its large espresso stained central island, shaker style cabinetry, honed Calacatta marble island top, polished pendant lighting and display cabinets, melds traditional and contemporary into a timeless and inviting space, that is just as comfortable hosting a formal dinner party as it is a casual evening at home! The new family room opens to the kitchen and allows family time to be shared through dinner preparation, homework and relaxation. The coffered ceiling adds depth and interest, while the windows create a sense of unity with the outdoor space and French doors give convenient access to the patio. Conversely, the dining room area of the home feels like you stepped back in time and takes on a different sense of peace.

The downstairs hall bathroom update included a custom inset, free standing vanity, white tile wainscoting and chair rail. It pays homage to the home’s elegant nature, with classic materials such as Bianco Carrara Marble and polished fixtures.

The new layout for the home added a second floor expansion. The new space above the kitchen/family room allowed for the addition of a secluded and spacious master suite, which included a dedicated master bath. The suite incorporated custom inset espresso cabinetry giving the homeowners plenty of storage, while contrasting with the light Bianco Carrara Marble countertop and basket weave tile floors. Transoms above the mirrors allow for natural light to enter the space, while maintaining privacy. The adjacent laundry/office space allows for a truly inclusive master suite!

The home’s existing second floor space was reconfigured to create an upstairs utility room with ample storage, updated bathrooms and more functional bedrooms. The original Jack and Jill bathroom served as the previous master bath and was shared with one of the children. It was definitely time for a remodel! The redesigned Jack and Jill bath now provides plenty of storage for the children, including space behind the mirrors, while blending with the original character of the home.

The home’s remodel was evocative of the city’s ‘old world charm’, but with the addition of the modern conveniences of contemporary life. The end result in this renovation was a perfect melding of the two worlds into a simply elegant home!

Upon completion of the renovation and with all fears put to rest the homeowner said, “If we had known there was a company out there like Weidmann who could do such a good job and make it so painless for us, we would have done it a lot sooner.”
