Everyone is a Genius

Appleton Learning understands all students learn differently. With our proprietary assessment, geniuStyle, we can understand how a student organizes, communicates, and processes information.

Think back to the last time you were a student and had to take a test. Do you recall that feeling of dread, staring at your textbook and knowing that you are not adequately prepared for that big test tomorrow?

Most of us recognize that feeling all too well (I know I do), and when you are not properly equipped to prepare for tests in a way that capitalizes upon the ways that you learn best, studying can be a daunting process.

The reality for many students today is that they are presented with information in school that they are expected to learn, but they lack any awareness of how it is that they learn best. As Purdue University psychologist Jeffrey D. Karpicke observes, “It’s a remarkable feature of our educational system that we give students so much stuff to learn and rarely tell them how to go about learning that stuff.”

At Appleton, we understand that every student is a unique learner and that we all learn differently. Acknowledging this, we developed geniuStyle, the world’s first
psychometric assessment for education that takes into account students’ social,
organizational and informational styles. We have identified eight distinct
geniuStyles: Aristotle, Da Vinci, Locke, Monet, Picasso, Plato, Rembrandt, and
Socrates.

I am an Aristotle learner, which means that I am introverted, practical, and organized—in other words, my geniuStyle is most congruent with the demands of the typical classroom. I process information, communicate and organize myself very differently, for example, than my coworker who is a Picasso learner. As a Picasso, she is outgoing, innovative, and spontaneous, and as you might imagine, she learns very differently than I do. Because she and I understand the differences between our geniuStyles, we know that we do not process information or organize ourselves in the same way. In short, we recognize that we learn
differently.

Understanding your geniuStyle and how you learn best can be invaluable for any learner, no matter how young or old. If you are a student, knowing how you best process information and how you can organize yourself most effectively can help you to capitalize upon your strengths as a learner and identify potential areas for
improvement. If you know how you learn best, you can cater your study habits to
best suit your academic needs, both at school and at home. As Albert Einstein once famously observed, “Everybody is a genius.” Here at Appleton we truly take Einstein’s statement to heart, helping students and educators discover their inner genius.
