Can You Survive a Plane Crash? It's Not Impossible

Most assume the worst if they're on a plane that goes down, but new research shows otherwise.

Well known commercial jetliner incidents have caused a fatalistic view of plane crashes, but a recent intentional crash for the Discovery Channel's show, "Curiosity," hopes to improve aviation safety and prove a crash is actually survivable.

Government safety officials and scientists teamed up with the show to slam a 727 jetliner into the Mexican desert in order to get a rare look at what happens to passengers and equipment during a crash,according to a USA Today report.

"The chances are that if you're in a crash, you will survive," Tom Barth, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board told the popular newspaper.

The show is set to air on the Discovery Channel, Sunday, Oct. 7 at 9 p.m.
