Marriage Proposal Surprises Local Teacher, Crowd During Relay for Life of Roswell

A crowd of onlookers at Relay for Life of Roswell watched as Phillip Hurd proposed to Karrie Layton during the opening ceremony of the Relay Friday night.

Friday was a big day for Karrie Layton, a teacher at Dunwoody Springs Elementary School. She celebrated her birthday and her boyfriend, Phillip Hurd, popped the question in front of hundreds of Relay for Life of Roswell event participants during the opening ceremonies, Friday evening.

"Relay is her passion," said Katha Stuart, an event co-chair, on why Hurd chose Relay for Life as the site of his proposal.

With help from Relay organizers, Hurd, an auditor at Georgia Institute of Technology, orchestrated a plan behind the scenes, and right on cue, he professed his love, dropped to his knees and asked Layton to marry him.
