UPDATE: Should This Worn U.S. Flag Still Be On Display?

The flag is on display at Roswell Area Park currently.

UPDATED Wednesday, April 10, 4:57 p.m. - In the comments below, the city has said the flag has been retired and a new flag will be flown in its place.

The flag at the Physical Activity Center in Roswell Area Park has at least one Roswell Patch reader dismayed.

"I'm sorry to see an American flag in such poor condition flying on city property," Megan Zavieh posted to the Roswell Patch Facebook page.

The American flag, with its distinctive thirteen horizontal stripes and 50 stars, is a symbol of America's "strength and unity."

Proper flag etiquette says U.S. flags shouldn't touch the ground or anything else when they're flying or being lowered. They should be cleaned and mended, as needed and, when so worn they're no longer fit to fly, they should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner, according to the USA Flag Site.

"It does not look like it is being cared for properly as it is faded and tattered," wrote Zavieh. "Does the city leave it out at night and in all weather?"

Roswell Patch has reached out to the city for comment and whether or not they plan to replace the flag soon. Check back for updates.

Tell us what you think about the condition of the flag? Has it outlived it use as a dignified symbol of our country?
