To Park Or Not To Park

Getting burned by Atlanta's hopeless parking situation.

You may remember . Well, you'll be happy to know my traffic rancor extends inside the perimeter. Finding a free place to park legally in Atlanta is like finding a unicorn in downtown Detroit.

And if you happen to slip up and park somewhere deemed unfit, the parking gods will mete out retribution in under 15 seconds in the form of a ticket, a boot, or a tow.

I did my typical suburban mom thing during a recent night out in the big city and pulled my car into the first available spot I found, because I was in no mood to gamble for a closer one and circle the block 50 times while avoiding one-way streets, cyclists and pedestrians like a nightmarish video game.

The place I parked was next to a post with no less than four signs conveying completely different messages. No parking between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. Two hour maximum parking between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. No parking between 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. And then, the sign I ultimately should have listened to, a straight-up "No Parking."

My logic told me that all the stipulations meant parking was allowed here at some point during the day and since I wasn't within those specified banned hours, I should be fine. I know, I should have moved on to a spot with no signs. But I wasn't confident in my ability to find one before my patience was depleted.

So after enjoying a mom's night out, I returned to my car to find a ticket wedged snugly under my windshield wiper. Really? REALLY? I was parked in a long line of other cars not blocking anything. What was so scandalous about my few feet of parking space that made me a criminal? And by the way, your parking signage makes no sense Atlanta, you transportation/traffic plague of the south.

I would seek revenge by only using MARTA from now on when I need to travel ITP, but I think the real loser in that scenario would be me.
