Ideas for Creating a Fall Wardrobe

Just because summer is coming to an end doesn't mean we have to start all over with a new fall wardrobe. By choosing certain pieces you have been wearing this summer, you can extend the value of your clothing by choosing pieces that will easily transition into great looks for fall.

Here are some ideas:

1.  A Summer Cotton Knit Sweater
From Summer -
A great cotton knit really comes in handy in the summertime whether at the beach, boating or maxed out AC units in restaurants or movie theatres. This sweater can we worn with shorts or cotton skirts.

To Fall - This sweater is a wonderful transition piece as it's light enough to wear in summer, it's substantial enough to wear into fall as a layering piece. Pair it with some jeans (instead of the shorts or cotton broomstick skirt) pair it with jeans of the season and boots – a light weight scarf or hat can definitely provide a great look for Fall.

2.  A Denim skirt – mini or not

From Summer -Denim is another fabric that is multi-seasonal. A denim skirt is great with a tee or a tank.  Pair this look with a canvas wedge or small heel for a nice summer look.

To Fall -  Add leggings and a great sweater or jacket and you have an outfit that won’t break your bank and provides a hip Fall into Winter, look.  Pair this with a boot (with or without heel) or flats to complete the look.  Please keep in mind as you select leggings -  they are a layering piece so if you are selecting a mini denim skirt, you may want to try a skinny jean or trouser as well as you don’t want to look like you are going to dance class.

3. Capri Pants (black preferably)
From Summer -
A cotton capri pant is a great wardrobe staple for a year-round look. This pant is very versatile and a great transition piece from Summer to Fall climates. Add a fun top and some cute sneaker for a great look or try tying a short scarf around your neck for a Grace Kelly look.

To Fall – For a Fall look, try pairing this pant with a sweater vest or light weight jacket with some heels (small to medium heel height) for a polished and professional look. If a shorter length pant  - pair with a rounded toe to create modern retro feeling that  gives a whole new life to the pant or trouser.

4. A Dress
From Summer –
A Microfiber or cotton dresses are always a big hit for the summer. Part of the reason is that the weight of the material is so versatile for different temperatures.

To Fall In the past, it has been a fashion faux to mix lighter weight materials with much heavier ones. Mixing a lighter weight dress with a colored, patterned stocking and boots works in transition into Fall. If you have dresses with a floral pattern in fall colors such as burnt orange, dark green and chocolate brown – the easiest transition for this look. Also try a thin knit turtleneck under a dress!  The idea is about mixing opposite elements into the same outfit to exaggerate their effect.

6. Accessories

From Summer -  Bright colors accessories in yellow, pinks, whites and pastels work well in summer months.  These colors are a carefree addition in jewelry, purses or bags and scarves.

To Fall - Add a scarf made of wool, cashmere or a more heavy fabric. Chooses darker colors such as purple, burgundy or grey or black for a Fall look. A darker handbag can also completely change the look of an outfit. Look for handbags with lots of texture, such as feathers, fur, studs and buckles – animal prints are always a welcomed addition.  As far as accessories go, nail polish fits this category. Try to move away from bright nail colors to darker shades for Fall.

As you begin to transition your wardrobe, think about what else you may have in your closet to create a great Fall look.  If you do need to buy some new items to complete your wardrobe, I would suggest grey/white or a black t-shirt, dark tights or boots.  These items would be a good investment and can be used to create many other outfits.  Check out summer sales for some of these items – Vintage and Vogue Boutique has summer items on sale (50-75% off) which includes many light weight sweaters.

With the last few weeks of Summer upon us, make sure you get the chance to wear your lightweight items before it is too late and put aside the transition items for Fall.  Embrace the change ladies……in season.
