A man was shot and killed at a Peachtree Corners extended hotel early Friday morning.

Corporal Edwin Ritter, Gwinnett Police spokesman, said police were called to the Homestead Extended Stay motel on Jimmy Carter Boulevard at 1:20 a.m. Friday. Ritter said that when police arrived they "discovered a black male laying in the breezeway of the 100 building with multiple gunshot wounds."

A Holly Springs police officer has been hospitalized for injuries he suffered when a parade float he was riding in was hit by a train in Midland, Texas.

Officer Shane Ladner is being treated for back injuries and has been sedated, said Holly Springs Police Chief Ken Ball. Ladner was one of 25 veterans who were participating in the annual "Hunt for Heroes" event coordinated by Show of Support. 

Ball noted Ladner's wife Meg is in critical condition. Holly Springs-Hickory Flat Patch has more.

Marietta Man Sentenced After Undercover Teen Sex Sting - Marietta Patch

James Christopher Redman, 52, of Marietta, who arranged to meet who he thought was a 14-year-old girl for sex in a Barrow County park, was sentenced Thursday by United States District Court Judge Richard W. Story, according to United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates Northern District of Georgia.

Redman was sentenced to 10 years in prison to be followed by a lifetime of supervised release for enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity. He pleaded guilty to the charges on July 27, 2012, according to Yates. Marietta Patch has the full story.

- Cartersville Patch

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal shooting by police at an Evergreen Trail home in Cartersville. The 66-year-old woman who was shot and killed by Bartow County deputies produced a handgun during the execution of the search warrant, CBS Atlanta reports. A family member told the station authorities had entered the woman's home on a "no-knock" warrant.

Bartow County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said two Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force agents used "deadly force" as they executed the drug warrant. Find more details and updates on Cartersville Patch.
