Roswell 'Chicken Man' Cries Foul

Andrew Wordes lost most of his chickens this past weekend to what he believes was poisoning by a trespasser.

UPDATE: July 7 10:50 a.m. It wasn't a very happy holiday weekend for Andrew Wordes, who returned home from a short trip to find nearly all of his chickens dead or dying.

According to Wordes, the deaths of his isn't an accident. He believes 45 of about 50 chickens were killed, possibly with poision, by "someone with a grudge." The blow is direct hit, but it's just one of many in the years he's spent fighting the city for his right to raise and keep chickens on his property just off Alpharetta Highway, he says.

On Tuesday, July 5, Roswell PD spokesperson James McGee said the incident was not reported to the Roswell Police Department.

"I understand there was an e-mail sent out but no call to the police," he had said, noting he had heard that Wordes did not want the police involved.

But Thursday, July 7, McGee contacted Roswell Patch to say the department is now working a case on the incident, which was reported on July 1.

Most of the now dead fowl were chicks, according to Wordes. Some of them were turkeys he was hatching out for their owner, Roswell Mayor Jere Wood.

"At first I thought they had just been let out of cages, but then the ones I did save started dying," Wordes said.

Even if they had only been let out of their cages, that would take someone quite a bit of effort and time, according to Wordes, who is sending away for a toxicology report on the chickens.

The timing was also not coincidental, he says.

Not only did someone have to know he was gone, but they would have to be bold enough to ignore posted warnings.

"No one ever comes onto my property, [no trespassing] signs are posted very clearly," he said. "Even the police don't pull onto the property when they come by."

Because he won a case allowing him to keep fowl on his property prior to the city passing an ordinance that bans roosters and confines the number of chickens allowed to the size of the lot, Wordes will replace his chickens and turkeys, he says. He continues to battle the city over his fowl and property conditions.

His chicks were just the latest casualty in the fight that has raged since 2009.

Check back with Roswell Patch for new updates as we receive them.

It doesn't matter what your opinion is regarding the man and his chickens. Coming onto his property and killing his livestock is about the lowest thing you can do. That's just mean!
Andrew Wordes July 07, 2011 at 12:29 PM
The ROSWELL POLICE ARE LYING! I have filed two police reports and even have a case number and have emails from the police detective..
Christine Foster July 07, 2011 at 12:56 PM
Andrew, James McGee has contacted us to confirm your statement that you have filed a report and they are working the case. I have updated the story to that effect. I will continue to update/report as I receive information on this story.
Andrew Wordes July 07, 2011 at 01:03 PM
Funny how everyone in the city know what happened and The Roswell Police told your newspaper and CBS ATLANTA that I didn't file a police report when in fact I have filed two!! hmmmmmmmmm

Mr. Wordes, I work at Fulton County Animal Services on animal cruelty cases and was given the wrong contact information for you. Please email me at Lajanssen1@aol.com on how to contact you. I have already spoken to UGA. Thank you, Laura Janssen

Are you sure that keeping so many animals in such close quarters under less than sanitary conditions did not contribute to a spread of illness? Are you investigating the possibility of disease in addition to toxicology?
Andrew Wordes July 07, 2011 at 08:09 PM
Jane Smith~~You have never even been on my property so you are probably just repeating what Roswell has told you! If you are the J. Smith who signed an affidavit, my lawyer will enjoy taking your depostion prior to court. Just so you know, Roswell has had both Fulton Country Health Dept and and Fulton County Animal Services investigate and both investigators found nothing wrong. That has been documented. .
Andrew Wordes July 07, 2011 at 08:10 PM
It is a police matter now and they are taking care of it.

Andrew, I am so sorry to hear this! What kind of freaks live in Roswell? If someone abuses a dog or cat..they go to jail! I hope they catch the piece of S... who did this...Keep up the good fight! I support you 100%
Michael Reissig July 08, 2011 at 04:35 AM
How do we know that you aren't the one that went over to the property and did this yourself? I have been to Andrew's property several times and there is nothing unsanitary there. He has conformed to every demand the city has thrown at him while at the same time repairing his home from repeated floodings directly linked to illegal overbuilding on a flood plain.
Andrew Wordes July 08, 2011 at 12:13 PM
Thank you very much Dan for your unbiased opinion. These poor baby chicks and young turkeys never did anything wrong and never had a chance to enjoy life living freely on Mayor Wood's ten acres. I want to add RPD is working dilligently to solve this incident.
cathy coleman July 08, 2011 at 07:58 PM
I have 2 comments = first for "jane smith" I am a neighbor of Andy's = i have been on his property, in his chicken yard, and it is not unsanitary - probably cleaner than most yards of people who own several dogs - please do not pass judgement on him unless you have been there yourself, which, obviously you have not been.
cathy coleman July 08, 2011 at 08:02 PM
Andy - I am so sorry to hear about this. Who ever did this is clearly a sociopath and evil. To harm helpless animals, and to harm the owner and caretaker of the poor things - for any reason - is inexusible , Please let me know if there is any thing I can do
Danny July 09, 2011 at 03:19 PM
With so much support, I'm sure all will help Chicken Man replace the chickens he loves like many love cats, dogs, etc. Chickens are quite unique in that we eat them before they're born (eggs), and after they are dead (nuggets). They helped settle America. A traveling food store in covered wagons. And a walking store at cabins. Also consider the chickens cousin, the eagle, is a National symbol. Consider the eagle a chicken on steroids.

Horrifying to hear of such cruelty to animals and their caretaker. If you need help sanitizing the coops or your yard from the poison, or need donations to help replace your chicks, or help in any other way let us know.
Andrew Wordes July 12, 2011 at 07:28 AM
Thanks Cathy! Anyone who has been here would never make a comment like "Jane Smith" did. Funny how FULTON Health Dept and FULTON County Animal Control didn't have problem when the City of Roswell requested they inspect my property numerous times.
Clayton July 18, 2011 at 02:46 AM
Clean up your yard Chicken Man. You're an eyesore to the whole community. Chickens in your basement! Really. I wish some of your supporters on this blog had to live next to you... I think they'd change their minds. What about the Roswell police having to spend 3-4 hours in my yard rounding up your pot belly pigs? You owe me and the other Roswell taxpayers for that one. If they come on property again, I'll be having Ribs for dinner!
Andrew Wordes July 18, 2011 at 04:49 PM
Clayton, First off the in the basement were BABY CHICKS, NOT CHICKENS! Why don't you use your real name and ask Roswell why they have refused to buy my property when they are responsible for the storm water the floods it constantly and has caused me great financial harm. My neighbors have abbandoned their home of 18 years due to the flooding. Roswell has also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on code enforcement cases, writing laws that are directed at me and everything keeps getting thrown out of court . They have also wasted YOUR TAX MONEY having the the police follow me. This has all be substantiated. Anytime you want to meet and see the facts, just let me know.
terry adams July 20, 2011 at 12:37 AM
It's people like "Clayton" who have ruined Roswell and turned it into a Naziesque community where the yankee transplants spend all their free time watching and reporting on their neighbors! The town is so heavily infested with these vermin, I moved to Cobb County!! Yankees are like hemorrhoids - - they'll come down, but they won't go back up !!!! Andrew, please let us know how we can send donations to you !!!!! You're a good man!!!! I'd rather live next to you and your chickens ANY DAY than have the taint of those low-caliber, crude, rude, ignorant yankees next door to me. Once the cowardly and cruel posioner is found, let him go to jail for a long long time!! In fact - - - give him the chair !!!!! I'm praying for you!!! The City of Roswell is run by idiots and the police are corrupt!!! Keep fighting!!! God bless !!!
Andrew Wordes July 20, 2011 at 04:22 AM
Clayton, Maybe the police need to find out where you were when this happened. Why are you not upset that Roswell has spent hundreds of thousands of YOUR TAX DOLLARS fighting about chickens instead of purchasing property they have caused to flood by allowing overbuilding? The house next door is now abandoned because of the constant flooding and the owners had lived there for 18 years.BTW why don't you be a man and let us know who you are?
janet h russell July 20, 2011 at 04:41 AM
Dear Mr. Adams, Interesting that you think all Yankees are vermin but it has been the good ole Southerners who want to forget their humble beginnings in the city of Roswell and force Mr. Wordes to get rid of his chickens. Since you feel so strongly about the people who live in Roswell, we are actually quite fortunate that you have chosen to move to Cobb County. Seems like a perfect fit.
Andrew Wordes July 20, 2011 at 04:58 AM
I think Mr. Admas was just venting his frustrations that we all have with the city of Roswell. Most residents (short of one neighbor) I meet are supportive and believe I won my fight with the city and don't even care about the chickens. Most people think it is over and love to see the roosters at Alive After 5. As you are well aware, Roswell has devoted more money to this than solving any or the real problems we face in Roswell on a daily basis It is the Roswell City Council and City Administrator who wants to show everyone "You listen to whatever we say" and don't argue or we will do whatever we need to do, legal or illegal to force you out of Roswell. Were you aware The CIty of Roswell has filed a 55 page lawsuit to take my house from me. It is the first lawsuit of it's type ever filed by Roswell against a resident.

Are you serious? I can't believe you would have this kind of reaction without the facts. Fortunately the Patch has thankfully done a followup story where the toxicology report clearly shows that basically these birds were STARVED TO DEATH. They had no food in their stomachs, and bacteria was present. It sounds to me like these birds were starving to death in their own filth, and here you are accusing the neighbor or being someone we should watch out for as a potential murderer?
Michael Reissig August 28, 2011 at 05:08 PM
I was there Melissa Wexford, these birds were NOT starved to death, they were well fed. Anyone whom believes these test results at face value needs to have their heads checked. Their 'poor' neighbor threw a party the night Andrew went to jail, has been very confrontational, and called NUMEROUS police reports that were NOT valid. Explain how the sample birds were 'starved' while there were many others that were taken in and well fed?
Melissa Wexford August 28, 2011 at 09:37 PM
Gee whiz, I don't blame the neighbor for being "very confrontational." How do you expect him to respond when people like you accuse him of being someone that we ought to watch out for as someone who might be killing people sometime in the future. I don't know if he did or didn't have a party, but.. so what, do you seriously believe this guy would poison his neighbors birds with some undetectable poison and then have a party to celebrate? I think you're starting to grasp at straws. I don't have to explain how the sample birds were starved. It clearly states in the report that there was nothing in their stomach or their gizzards. As for the rest of the birds, I have no idea what condition they were in .. their information isn't in the report. From what I read, it was Mr. Wordes and the Mayor, Mr. Wood who collected these birds and sent them away to be tested. I don't know that for sure, but are you now suggesting that whoever sent the birds away to be tested are part of the conspiracy too?
