UPDATED: Roswell Chicken Man's Home Explodes

Andrew Wordes' home exploded Monday afternoon, March 26, as Fulton County Marshals were on the property to evict him.

UPDATED: Monday, March 26, 7:08 p.m. Years of legal hassles - first over keeping chickens on his property, then over city code violations and finally over his foreclosure - came to an explosive end Monday afternoon when the Alpine Drive home of Andrew Wordes blew up while Fulton County Marshals were on the property to evict him.

Roswell Police Spokesman James McGee told Roswell Patch a body was found inside the home by firefighters, but could not confirm whether or not it was Wordes.

The home went up in flames following the explosion, which occurred just before 1 p.m. Fire Chief Ricky Spencer said the fire was put out just before 2:30 p.m., on Monday. He also said there were no injuries to emergency personnel, but could not give any further details about how the fire started, despite speculation by other media outlets. A full investigation could take anywhere from a few days up to several weeks until it's complete.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the explosion was an accident or intentional.

According to a Tweet by Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik, Wordes had called him just before the explosion to tell him to warn Marshals to leave because "it wasn't going to be pretty."

Wordes is known for his his long time . He spent when he graded his yard in an attempt to prevent flooding, he said. Wordes told Roswell Patch at the time that .

A motion had been filed to prevent the foreclosure and was still pending at the time of the explosion, according to several sources.

A friend of Wordes, Lee Fleck, forwarded Roswell Patch an e-mail sent to him during the wee hours of Monday morning, prior to a 9:30 a.m. hearing Wordes had concerning his property.

"My biggest concern is that since Roswell police officers should be at my scheduled trial at 9:30 a.m., Roswell Police and the [Fulton County] Marshall may think I am going to be in court and attempt to execute the writ of possession thinking I am not home. I am going to make sure I am outside in the morning in case they come by. As soon as I hear you have the order I am going to go to my 9:30 ... court hearing. Please call me as soon as you know anything so I can get my butt to court," he wrote in the e-mail to his attorneys.

Assistant City Attorney Bob Hulsey told Roswell Patch in an e-mail that there were no current Roswell citations or court proceedings pending against Wordes.

"My understanding is that today's events were precipitated by an order of eviction by Fulton Magistrate Court," he wrote.

Roswell Patch will bring you more details as we receive them.

Rob, you ought to get a RECALL movement started against those city council members. Maybe you or Lee Fleck could lead it. Stupidity is dangerous. Those imbeciles need to go!

For those concerned about what transpired with Mr. Wordes, I recommend that you check out this blog. It's full of good information that needs to be shared. www.theperspicaciousconservative.com/2012/03/26/its-not-over/

Well Mr. Ron you have had a lot to say and unfortunately you don't know what has gone on in this area for the last 13 year. Maybe one day you will. My daughter has gone to see Mr. Wordes, prayed with him, talked with him and at the time he seemed receptive. I on the other hand for many years have tried to ignore all that was going on, keep quiet and don't make waves. This was until he approached me personally and I couldn't believe what he wanted. After this I decided being passive and not stating facts was not the way to go. When this explosion happened, power went out, we were told to evaculate because there had been explosion at his house and no mention of anyone in there. Yes that was an unkind remark but I thought why does this keep going on. There are children that get off and on the bus in front of his house, the mentally challenged boy that walks by to catch marta and all the others that walk. My hope is one day the whole truth about everything will come out and it usually does.

Just read your quote that Rob referred to - here it is -"Not surprised, not surprised because he hadn't had any attention for a while," said neighbor Ramona Mays, who watched firefighters dousing the flames. "He's got to do his last hurrah." Man, you are one cold-blooded, judgemental, self-important person! Can't believe you made that statement in public! Senility may be setting in, Ms. Mays. You self-proclaimed Christians give the rest of us real Christians a bad name! I hope you have to look at the burned out shell of Chicken Man's house for a long time, but of course, you and the other neighbors so critical of Mr. Wordes will start complaining to the city about THAT now. So glad I'm gone from Roswell with residents like you !

"We couldn't understand why he didn't just obey the law like everyone else." Spoken like a real doormat. Lady, there is nothing sacred about man-made law. We used to have Jim Crowe laws - should everybody have obeyed them? If they make a law against sitting on your front porch, will you just obey it? Engage your brain before you speak, please.
Clucky Girl March 30, 2012 at 03:03 PM
Wow, reading Ramona May's remarks makes me think of the wicked witch neighbor that took Toto away from Dorothy, just sayin'...Ramona, you've got some serious mental issues apparently you need to deal with. I will laugh when the city uses eminent domain to steal your house.
Jerry Hamilton March 30, 2012 at 06:02 PM
Yes basically the laws are there for a reason and Andrew and the chickens won their initial battles, but the corrupt city officials litterally re-wrote the law to diliberately work against Andrew.

Rob, I've just reread this comment and you are so right - - the government is not a thing - it's made up of PEOPLE. We all speak against evil government such as Nazi Germany as if it's a faceless entity, but thousands of PEOPLE made up that government and it was those evil thousands of people who committed all those atrocities against their fellow man. And it's the PEOPLE in Roswell government who brought this Wordes tragedy about - walking, breathing PEOPLE with their own insecurities and need for a feeling of power or self-worth, whether they be the council members or the foot soldiers over there who happily did the bidding of their supervisors. Those individual PEOPLE need to be held accountable and fired or recalled from office and publicly vilified for what they are! Roswell code enforcement is so unreasonable, they caused a friend of mine to relocate her business to another city. Those non-productive parasites don't seem to understand that the small businessman is the BACKBONE of the economy. Instead businesses get treated like the Enemy by these silly people running around in brown uniforms checking on illegal temporary signs, for God's sake!!! And our tax money is going to pay people to do such silly jobs???? Man, it would be funny if it wasn't so outrageous. But governments never have any trouble finding people for such jobs. There are LOTS of losers out there! BTW, Rob, you're a great writer. Do you have a blog? If not, you should start one!

A post-mortum article in Sunday's AJC contains the facts of which I have contributed.

Andrew & I meet went to the FBI office well over a year ago. Andrew claimed that his civil rights were being violated by the City of Roswell. The FBI's response was don't call us - we'll call you. The GBI only comes in if requested bya local law enforcement entity. What were the odds of that happening?
hog man March 31, 2012 at 04:02 AM
who is going to clean up the mess at the house on alpine? cars, refrigerators, a boat that looks like it ran ashore? maybe some of the folks that cared for him so will help?...can you come and take some some of the trash away? lets have a memorial clean up....or will the taxpayers of roswell have to deal with this too?
hog man March 31, 2012 at 04:21 AM
Lee, to say that mayor woods didn't "step up" is a little wrong, don't ya think? he offered the man to live on his land before being evicted, he gave him money, and he constantly battled city council for wordes...i don't understand?
Ramona Mays March 31, 2012 at 01:44 PM
Michael, Before you judge there are a lot of facts you have no idea about. My husband has worked in Mr. Wordes yard in the past. When the chicken issue started I was totally on his side. Didn't mind a few chickens and thought it was cute. Made up chicken cards to show friends and would have gone to battle for him. After a time I saw a lot of things happening that I knew were wrong so I threw away the cards and gave up. It is hard to watch something unfold that no matter what you try being kind, mean or whatever doesn't work. If I sound mean it is because I have been upset and mad at him and a lot of other people. This could have been solved along time ago. No one should take their life when there is a better way. As I have said before you cannot force help on a person. I am and will continue to be upset and mad for a long time about this whole situation.
Lee Fleck March 31, 2012 at 02:07 PM
Michael, I don't believe it's God who has a special place for the latter. I think it's the other guy with the pitch fork.
lee Turner April 01, 2012 at 12:27 AM
Oh, listent to Hog Man! Wordes' body is hardly cold and Mr. Property-Values is belly aching about when the clean-up is going to take place. I hope it takes a loooooong time! LOL!
Michael Frisbee April 01, 2012 at 01:19 AM
That's ok Lee - within the next few years, more homes in that area will become targets of the city as they prepare for their future city park.
Dan April 01, 2012 at 04:44 PM
You're som'thin' else, hog man. Have you no empathy? Dang, you're mean! Grinch season doesn't start for another eight months!

This is the sort of thing that should NEVER happen in America. This tragedy is not solely about Mr. Wordes. And it is certainly not about chickens. It is about the egregious uses to which government power may be put. It was a simple case of Mr. Wordes offending individuals in the machine of government and the reality that a very few civil servants simply didn't like him. Citizens of Roswell, we have a bigger problem on their hands than a merely corrupt government. This travesty take us right past corrupt and into deliberately evil. As John Adams said: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." I am placing the blame for this tragedy squarely upon the people of Roswell. And I hope and pray that we all come to an understanding of our duties and responsibilities. I encourage the citizens of Roswell take a much firmer hold of their governmental apparatus in the future. Andrew Wordes’ tragedy is the true meaning of "Live Free or Die". George Washington stated: “Which is more blameworthy, those who will see and steadily pursue their own interest or those who cannot see or seeing will not act wisely ?”

Your compliant sort would live comfortably within the walls of any dictatorship. Laws are not necessarily the harbinger of common sense or social intelligence as most Americans are conditioned to believe. Laws can be useless, ridiculous, and, even, deadly. It is up to smart and freedom-loving folks to constrain the consistently overbearing rule of numskulls who seek to impose the often violent will of authority upon those who see life differently than they.
Krist Hochburger April 13, 2012 at 09:51 PM
What happened to Mr. Wordes could happen to any of us. It is our not only our right but our DUTY to raise awareness on this horrible, tragic situation and DEMAND that a criminal investigation is conducted. If we dont stand up for others rights there will be no one left to stand up for ours!
Lee Fleck April 14, 2012 at 01:12 AM
Krist, On April 30 at 7 PM there will be an "Open Mic" city Council meeting where any membet of the public may speek for as lon as they wish. I encourage any interested citizen to come forward,

Roswell Police deny access of visiting press to Roswell City Hall (you will not read about it in the local print press): http://www.infowars.com/infowars-reporters-harassed-by-cops-for-asking-questions-about-chicken-man/

Lee, thank you for the info on "open mic" night. I will be there. Hopefully we will have more luck than Darren Mc brean.

I urge everybody to write the governor and state attorney general to demand a formal investigation of all the connivances by the slimey city politicians and employees involved in this outrage. It doesn't have to be a long letter Just a couple of sentences will do. If Governor Deal DOESN'T look into this then his career in politics could be over, as there's a huge outcry, and not just from people in Roswell. This has almost gone viral. Hold the politicians' feet to the fire, especially Rich Dippolito and Beck Wynn (council members). The zoning director, Bradford Townsend, may carry a lot of responsibility too - not sure. Let's bombard the governor with these requests.
Lee Fleck April 14, 2012 at 07:39 PM
Mr. Turner, the most appropriate protocols would be to start with the Fulton County DA Paul Howard's office. The Assistant DA's name is Todd Ashley. He has an office in North Fulton off of North Point Parkway. Phone # is 404-730-4980
Dan April 15, 2012 at 11:47 PM
Wow. What are they hiding, one would naturally wonder? Thanks for the post, Lee.

Hi all, I am entering into this a little late. Originally from Iowa, moved here from Phoenix about 9 months ago. My dad was going through similar things as Andy. What's the latest? How can I get involved? How or should we hold anyone accountable for this?
