UPDATE: Roswell Officer Injured in I-575 Crash

The officer has been flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment.

A officer with the Roswell Police Department was injured in a multi-vehicle accident that shut down part of Interstate 575 in Cobb County.

The officer, who was riding on his personal motorcycle, has been life-flighted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta to undergo treatment for his injuries.

"He was conscious and alert when he was on the scene," said Roswell Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Holland.

Holland added she didn't know the officer's specific condition.

The Cobb County Police Department responded to multiple calls around 1:24 p.m. Friday in reference to multiple vehicles involved in an accident on Interstate 575 northbound between Bells Ferry Road and the Cherokee County line.

Sgt. Dana Pierce with the Cobb police department said a motorcycle was traveling northbound on the Interstate when traffic ahead of the vehicle began to slow due to "normal traffic flow on a Friday afternoon."

Sgt. Pierce said the motorcyclist began to slow down, and was hit from behind by a driver in a black Toyota Camry.

After it was hit, Pierce said the motorcycle then struck a silver Chrysler Sebring, which was traveling in the northbound lane next to it. At some point, a white Chevrolet 4x4 pick-up truck was also involved in the accident, but Pierce noted it's unclear what role the truck played.

"The only thing we positively know is driver of motorcycle was hit by the Toyota Camry," Pierce added.

The accident initially shut down all four lanes of the interstate. The southbound lanes were re-opened earlier this afternoon and Pierce noted one northbound lane of I-575 has also been opened.

The agency, with the help of the Georgia State Patrol, hopes to re-open all northbound lanes "soon," Pierce said.

In the meantime, motorists can use Canton Road or Bells Ferry Road as alternates.
